Dismantling Office Chair Casters

Admin October 10, 2026

The method for dismantling office chair casters should be selected based on their design type. Here are the common types and steps:

I. Snap-fit Design

These casters are secured with elastic snaps and can be removed without tools.

  1. Steps: Turn the chair upside down (with the seat facing down), grasp the caster bracket with your hand, and pull the caster out evenly. If the snap is tight, use a flat-head screwdriver wrapped in a soft cloth (to avoid scratching the chair leg) to gently pry the edge of the snap to assist in separation.
  2. Precautions: Avoid violent pulling to prevent the snap from breaking or the chair leg from deforming. If the wheel is aged and causes the snap to stick, spray a small amount of lubricant to soften it before operating.

II. Snap Ring Design

These casters are held in place by an elastic metal snap ring at the top of the wheel axle and require compressing the snap ring to release the wheel.

  1. Steps:
    • Method 1: Use your thumb and index finger to gently press both sides of the wheel axle whileๆŽฐๅŠจ (pulling outward) the wheel to utilize the snap ring's rebound force to slide it out.
    • Method 2: Use a slender tool (such as the tip of a key or tweezers) to press against the inside of the snap ring from the side of the wheel, press down gently, and pull the wheel outward simultaneously.
  2. Precautions: Never use a screwdriver to pry at the seam forcefully, as this can easily scratch the metal surface of the chair leg or damage the snap ring structure. If the snap ring is rusted, spray a rust remover to soften it before operating.

III. Threaded Design

These casters are connected to the chair leg via threads and require tools for removal.

  1. Steps:
    • Use a small wrench (such as an M10 size) to align with the nut at the bottom of the wheel, turn the screw to the left to loosen it, and completely unscrew it to remove the wheel.
    • If the wheel separates from the axle (such as when the internal bearing is stuck), use pliers to grip the interface of the wheel axle as a fulcrum, pry while turning the wheel counterclockwise, and gradually disassemble it.
  2. Precautions: Measure the thread size before disassembly (the standard size is usually 10mm) to facilitate replacing matching parts. For rusted screws, spray lubricant or rust remover and let it sit for 10 minutes before operating.

General Safety Tips

  1. Protect the seat: Place a soft cloth or old towel between the seat and the ground to prevent scratching the fabric.
  2. Wear gloves: Wear anti-scratch gloves during operation to avoid cuts from metal edges.
  3. Environment requirements: Choose a spacious and dry area to prevent tools or parts from slipping and causing injuries.

If you cannot determine the caster type, first observe the connection between the wheel and the chair leg: snap-fit designs have no visible screws, snap ring designs have an elastic metal ring, and threaded designs have nuts or threaded interfaces. Choose the corresponding method based on these characteristics to efficiently complete the disassembly.
