Dismantling Office Chair Armrests

Admin October 11, 2026

When dismantling office chair armrests, choose the appropriate method based on the fixing method. The common types are screw fixing and snap-in fixing, with the specific steps as follows:

Steps for Dismantling with Screw Fixing

  1. Locate the Screws:
Observe the gaps at the bottom, sides, or where the armrests connect to the chair body to find the fixing screws. Some screws may be covered by plastic caps and need to be carefully pried open with a flat tool (such as a plastic pry bar) to avoid scratching the surface.
  2. Select the Appropriate Tool:
Choose a screwdriver or Allen wrench that exactly matches the size according to the type of screw slot (flat-head, Phillips) or the Allen wrench model. An ill-fitting tool can easily cause the screw to slip, increasing the difficulty of dismantling.
  3. Unscrew the Screws:
Align the tool with the screw and turn it counterclockwise with even force to loosen it. If the screw is tight or rusty, a small amount of lubricant (such as WD-40) can be sprayed to help loosen it. Do not force it, to prevent damage to the screw head.
  4. Separate the Components and Store the Screws:
After unscrewing all the screws, hold the armrest cover firmly with both hands and gently lift it up or pull it outward to separate it from the frame. Place the screws in a container to avoid losing or mixing them up.

Steps for Dismantling with Snap-in Fixing

  1. Find the Snap-in Gaps:
Check along the joint between the armrest cover and the frame to usually find the gaps or interfaces where the snap-in connections are made. Some designs may be hidden under cushions or decorative strips and require patient observation.
  2. Use a Plastic Pry Bar:
It is strongly recommended to use a plastic pry bar or a discarded hard plastic card (such as a bank card) to avoid scratching the components with metal tools. Insert the tip of the pry bar into the gap and gently pry from one end to release the first snap-in.
  3. Gradually Separate the Snap-ins:
After the first snap-in is released, slowly move the pry bar along the gap and pry open the other snap-ins one by one. Maintain even force and gentle movements to avoid breaking the snap-ins or deforming the components by hard pulling.
  4. Remove the Armrest Cover:
After all the snap-ins are released, gently remove the cover. If there is resistance, check if there are any unreleased snap-ins and do not pull forcibly.

Other Precautions

  • Tool Preparation: In addition to screwdrivers and pry bars, you may need tools such as box wrenches and pliers, depending on the design of the chair. Choose flexibly according to the chair design.
  • Adjustable Armrests: If the armrests are adjustable, first find the plug at the lower part of the armrests, turn the bottom screw to reduce the resistance of the wire drawing, and then dismantle them.
  • Safe Operation: Handle the components gently during dismantling to avoid scratching the chair or getting injured by dropping. If you find that the connecting screws are loose, tighten them in a timely manner; check if the base is stable to prevent shaking and potential safety hazards.
  • Handling of Special Designs: Some chairs use hidden screws (such as those hidden under the bottom cushions) or sliding mechanisms (common in lifting swivel chairs). You can check the dust plugs or the inside of the armrests or refer to the product manual for operation.
