Dismantle Office Chair Hydraulic Rod
You can refer to the following methods for dismantling the hydraulic rod of an office chair. Choose a safe operation method according to the actual situation:

I. Simple and Brute-Force Dismantling Method (Suitable for emergency situations or when no special tools are available)
- Vertical Striking Method: Raise the hydraulic rod to its highest position to ensure sufficient operating space. Invert the chair so that the base is suspended in the air. Use a hammer with a diameter of about 3 centimeters to strike quickly around the gas rod or concentrate on striking the bottom edge of the gas rod, using the impact force to loosen the snap-fit. If the snap-fit is too tight, a small amount of lubricating oil can be used to reduce friction.
- Horizontal Striking Method: Keep the chair raised to its highest position. Use a sledgehammer to lightly strike the connection between the seat and the wheel frame, using the vibration to separate the hydraulic rod from the base. If the hydraulic rod is severely rusted, first spray a lubricant (such as WD-40) and let it sit for 10 minutes before trying again.
II. Conventional Tool Dismantling Method (Recommended for professional operations)
- Tool Preparation: Rubber mallet (or wooden mallet), pipe wrench/adjustable wrench, WD-40 lubricant, protective gloves, screwdriver (cross-head PH2 or hex key 4mm).
- Safety Precautions:
- Before dismantling, invert and secure the chair to prevent the hydraulic rod from suddenly popping out due to internal pressure (50-100 psi).
- If the hydraulic rod has oil leakage, clean up the oil stains first to avoid slipping.
- Operation Steps:
- Separate the Base from the Chair Legs: Lightly strike the connection of the base with a rubber mallet to gradually loosen the snap-fit; if it is fixed with screws, use a screwdriver of the corresponding size to dismantle.
- Remove the Hydraulic Rod:
- Ordinary Pneumatic Rod: Use a pipe wrench to clamp the bottom of the rod body and rotate it counterclockwise (requiring a torque of 30-50 Nยทm). If necessary, pad a cloth to increase friction or use a hot air gun to heat the metal joint (temperature โค 80ยฐC).
- Severely Rusted Rod Body: Spray WD-40 lubricant into the gaps, let it sit for 15 minutes, then lightly strike the rod body all around. Use a puller tool (suitable for hydraulic rods with a diameter โฅ 25mm) to assist in pushing it out.
III. Light Striking Dismantling Method (Suitable for minor snap-fit situations)
Invert the chair so that the base faces upwards. Use a rubber mallet to evenly strike the steel ring around the base, continuously striking lightly in a circular direction until the base loosens. Then, hold the hydraulic rod and gently shake the base to completely separate it from the rod body. This method causes less structural damage but is only suitable for situations where the snap-fit is not severely rusted.
Precautions: Wear protective gloves during operation to avoid cuts from metal debris; if the internal pressure of the hydraulic rod is abnormal (such as making strange noises), it is recommended to contact a professional maintenance technician for handling.
