Disinfection of Office Chairs

Admin October 08, 2026

Disinfecting office chairs requires selecting appropriate methods based on the material, as detailed below:

Leather Office Chairs

  • Avoid Alcohol: 75% medical alcohol, being an organic solvent, can damage the protective coating on the leather surface, leading to aging and peeling. Therefore, it is not recommended to use alcohol for wiping and disinfecting.
  • Recommended Disinfectants: Prioritize quaternary ammonium-based alcohol-free disinfectants (leather-friendly). Dilute them and gently wipe with a soft cloth, then dry with a dry cloth.
  • Daily Dusting: Gently wipe the surface with a clean, slightly damp soft cotton cloth (squeezed dry, not dripping), then dry with a dry cloth.
  • Stain Cleaning: Use a leather-specific neutral cleaner. First, test it in a hidden area at the bottom corner of the chair to ensure it does not whiten or fade the color. Then, wipe gently with a small amount and absorb the moisture with a dry cloth.

Mesh Fabric Office Chairs

  • Daily Cleaning: Use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment to remove dust.
  • Stain Treatment: Dilute a small amount of neutral cleaner and gently wipe with a soft cloth dampened with the solution, avoiding excessive wetness.
  • Disinfection Points: After spraying disinfectant or alcohol, ensure it evaporates and dries completely.

Sponge Parts (Common in Seat Cushions and Backrests)

  • General Cleaning: Wipe with a damp cloth and neutral cleaner, controlling the amount of water to prevent it from seeping into the interior and making it difficult to dry.
  • Special Case Handling: If the chair has been stepped on by someone with a fungal infection like athlete's foot, for removable and heat-resistant (e.g., pure cotton) seat cushion covers, try boiling them in water for more than 20 minutes or steaming them evenly with a steam iron for 15 minutes. Dilute a clothing-specific disinfectant according to the instructions and soak the cushion covers for more than 30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly and dry. For non-removable parts, use alcohol spray locally and let it sit for 10 minutes.

General Disinfection Recommendations

  • Process: Follow the process of "cleaning - disinfecting - removing residue". First, remove visible contaminants by sweeping away obvious dirt, debris, and other solid waste from the chair surface with a tissue or brush. Then, clean and remove dirt by thoroughly wiping the contaminated surface with a wet cloth containing a cleaner, focusing on removing oil stains and grime. Next, perform key disinfection by selecting an effective disinfectant for treatment. Use a disinfectant solution containing 250mg/L of available chlorine, spraying or wiping to ensure coverage of all contaminated areas, and maintaining its effect for 5-10 minutes.
  • Subsequent Treatment: After the disinfection effect is complete, wipe away any residual disinfectant on the chair surface with a clean, wet cloth. Finally, ensure the chair is completely air-dried before use.
