Disinfect Your Office Chair Yourself

Admin October 10, 2026

When disinfecting an office chair, follow the principle of 'clean first, then disinfect.' Here are the specific steps and material-specific adaptation methods:

I. Basic Disinfection Process

  1. Remove Visible Contaminants: Use tissue paper or a soft-bristled brush to clean up solid debris such as crumbs and dirt on the chair surface, preventing subsequent cleaners from being consumed by impurities.
  2. Clean and Remove Stains: Wipe the surface with a damp cloth containing a neutral cleaner, focusing on stubborn stains like shoe prints and oil stains. For heavier stains, locally spray the cleaner and let it sit for 2-3 minutes before wiping.
  3. Key Disinfection:
    • Chemical Disinfection: Choose a disinfectant containing 250mg/L of available chlorine or 75% medical alcohol, spray or wipe the contaminated area, and let it act for 5-10 minutes; or wipe with 84 disinfectant, let it sit for 30 minutes, and then wipe off the residue with a clean, damp cloth.
    • Operation Points: The disinfectant must fully cover the contaminated surface, avoiding omissions in crevices or folds.
  4. Remove Residue and Dry: Wipe the chair surface with a clean, damp cloth to remove disinfectant residue, ensuring the chair is completely dry before use to prevent bacterial growth from moisture.

II. Adaptation Methods for Different Materials

  1. Mesh Material:
    • After spraying alcohol or disinfectant for disinfection, allow it to evaporate and dry naturally, avoiding vigorous wiping that may deform the mesh.
    • For daily cleaning, use a vacuum cleaner with a soft-bristled brush attachment to remove dust; when dealing with stains, dilute a small amount of neutral cleaner, dip a soft cloth in it, and gently wipe, avoiding excessive moisture that may cause internal mold.
  2. Leather Material:
    • After disinfection, use a leather conditioner to prevent cracking; avoid direct sunlight to prevent accelerated aging.
    • For daily cleaning, wipe dust with a wrung-out cotton cloth; for stubborn stains, use a dedicated leather cleaner or diluted mild soapy water, wipe along the grain, then wipe clean with a damp cloth and absorb moisture with a dry cloth. Do not use strong corrosive cleaners such as alcohol or gasoline.
  3. Sponge Parts (Seat Cushion/Backrest):
    • Wipe with a damp cloth and neutral cleaner, controlling moisture penetration to prevent the internal sponge from being difficult to dry.
    • If the sponge develops mold, wipe it with diluted white vinegar and ventilate to dry.

III. Special Case Handling (Fungal Infection) If the chair has been stepped on by someone with a fungal infection such as athlete's foot, more thorough measures are required:

  1. High-Temperature Disinfection: Removable pure cotton seat cushion covers can be boiled in boiling water for 20 minutes or steamed with a steam iron for 15 minutes.
  2. Chemical Disinfection: Dilute a clothing-specific disinfectant and soak the cushion cover for 30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly and dry; for non-removable parts, locally disinfect with an alcohol spray and let it sit for 10 minutes.
  3. Physical Disinfection: Place removable parts under strong ultraviolet light (such as at noon) and expose them to the sun for more than 3 hours on each side.
