Discarding Office Chairs

Admin October 08, 2026

When discarding office chairs, appropriate methods should be adopted based on different situations, while also considering Feng Shui concepts and focusing on environmentally friendly disposal.

Legal Aspect

If a chair is severely damaged and is intentionally discarded in a public place with the intention of relinquishing ownership, the chair is then considered abandoned property. Generally, it is not illegal for someone to pick it up. However, attention should be paid to whether it involves public area management regulations, such as waste sorting requirements. Chairs made of different materials may fall into different waste categories and need to be sorted and disposed of correctly. Additionally, they should not be piled up haphazardly; otherwise, administrative penalties may be imposed.

Feng Shui Concept Aspect

From the perspective of Feng Shui or traditional beliefs, a broken chair is thought to be related to the owner's financial luck. A broken chair may cause one's financial luck to be unstable and make it difficult to accumulate wealth. Using a broken chair as an office chair may have a negative impact on the stability of one's career and even reduce career luck. Although Feng Shui concepts lack scientific basis, they hold an important position in the cognition and traditional customs of some people. If one cares about this aspect, they may consider disposing of the broken chair in a timely manner.

Environmentally Friendly Disposal Aspect

  • Recycling: If the external structure of the office chair is in good condition, one can contact second-hand furniture trading markets and resell it to those in need, thus achieving resource reuse. One can also contact charitable organizations and donate it to poor areas or groups in need, allowing the chair to continue to serve its purpose.
  • Repair and Reuse: If the structural damage of the chair is not severe, it can be repaired and reused. For example, in schools, it can be used as a spare seat; in households, after simple repairs, it can continue to be used, extending the chair's service life.
  • Environmentally Friendly Disposal: If the chair is no longer usable, an environmentally friendly disposal method should be chosen. It can be sorted and disposed of according to local waste sorting standards, with different parts of the chair put into the corresponding trash bins. If incineration is required, professional units must be contacted. Private incineration is not allowed because some materials may produce harmful gases, chemicals, and highly toxic substances, which can have a serious impact on the environment.
