Disassembly Method of Office Chair Legs
Admin October 09, 2026
The disassembly method for office chair legs depends on the type and structure of the chair, as detailed below:

I. Disassembly of Ordinary Office Swivel Chairs
- Disassembly of Snap-Ring Wheels: These wheels are fixed to the footrest with snap rings. To disassemble, pull them directly outward. Note: Both the plastic wheel and the fixed iron rod must be pulled out simultaneously. If only the plastic wheel is pulled out, leaving the iron rod behind, use pliers to grip the end of the iron rod and pull it out slowly to avoid damaging the footrest.
- Disassembly of Threaded Wheels: The wheels are connected to the footrest via threads. To disassemble, rotate the wheel to the left (counterclockwise) until it is completely detached from the footrest. If the threads are rusted, spray a small amount of lubricant (such as WD40) before operation.
II. Disassembly of Office Chairs with Gas Rods
- Separating the Footrest from the Gas Rod: Step on the footrest of the swivel chair with your foot and hold the seat cushion firmly with both hands. Rock it left and right while pulling upward to loosen the connection between the footrest and the gas rod through repeated actions. If the chair has been used for a long time, multiple attempts may be needed until complete separation is achieved.
- Removing the Gas Rod: Hold the top of the gas rod and strike the bottom of the gas rod (near the tapered hole of the five-star foot) with a rubber mallet to detach the gas rod from the footrest using vibration. Note: Keep the gas rod vertical while striking to avoid damaging the internal structure due to tilting.
III. Handling Rusted Metal Chair Legs
- Penetrating Rust Removal: Spray WD40 penetrant into the gaps of the screw joints and wait for 20 minutes to allow the lubricant to fully penetrate the rust layer. Then, use a wrench to grip the screw head and tap the handle of the wrench lightly with a hammer to loosen the rust layer through vibration.
- Forced Disassembly: If the screw head is hexagonal, insert a hexagonal wrench of the corresponding size into the hole, fit a metal tube over the wrench to extend the lever arm, and rotate it counterclockwise. If it still cannot be turned, use a blowtorch or soldering iron to heat the screw area for 30-60 seconds, using the principle of thermal expansion and contraction to break the rust layer (Note: High temperatures will damage the paint surface, requiring subsequent touch-up painting).
- Ultimate Solution: If all methods fail, use an angle grinder to cut off the screw head, leaving the threaded part for installing a new screw. Wear safety goggles during cutting to avoid metal splinter injuries.
Operation Tips: It is recommended to take photos of the chair structure before disassembly for easy reassembly. If the gas rod or complex structures are involved, it is advisable to operate with two people. Wear protective gloves when using tools to avoid cuts.
