Dining Chair or Office Chair

Admin October 10, 2026

Dining chairs are not suitable for long-term use as office chairs, but they can be used occasionally in emergencies. The specific reasons are as follows:

1. Ergonomic Adaptability Differences
Dining chairs are primarily designed to complement dining tables for eating. Their structures typically lack support components such as lumbar and neck rests. Ergonomic studies indicate that in office settings, continuous support for the waist and neck is required to distribute pressure. The flat design of dining chairs can prevent the natural curvature of the spine from being maintained during prolonged sitting, accelerating the accumulation of pressure on the intervertebral discs and increasing the risk of lumbar disc herniation. Additionally, the seat tilt angle of dining chairs is usually less than 5ยฐ, while professional office chairs typically offer a 10ยฐ-15ยฐ backward tilt adjustment function to help distribute pressure on the buttocks.

2. Inadequate Size Matching
The standard seat height range for dining chairs is 45-50 cm, suitable for dining tables that are 75 cm high. However, conventional office desks are 72-76 cm high. When using a dining chair for office work, it is difficult to form a natural 90ยฐ bend in the legs with the ground, leading to impaired blood circulation and causing numbness in the lower limbs. The fixed armrest height of some dining chairs cannot provide effective support against the edge of the office desk, forcing users to maintain a hunched shoulder posture for extended periods, which can easily induce shoulder and neck muscle strain.

3. Structural Safety Hazards
The load-bearing test standards for dining chairs are typically 100 kg for static loads and 80 kg for dynamic loads, whereas office chairs need to meet load-bearing requirements of 150 kg for static loads and 120 kg for dynamic loads. Prolonged exposure to frequent standing up and leaning back actions in office settings can cause metal fatigue in components such as the five-star base and gas lift of dining chairs, with the gas lift of low-priced dining chairs even posing a risk of explosion. Furthermore, the wheels of dining chairs are mostly fixed or designed with low friction, making them prone to scratching the floor when moved and lacking braking mechanisms, posing a risk of tipping over.

4. Recommendations for Emergency Use Scenarios
If a dining chair needs to be used temporarily for office work, the duration of each use should be limited to no more than 2 hours, and a footrest should be used to adjust leg posture. For short-term reception of visitors or handling light paperwork, dining chairs with cushioned seats can be chosen to enhance comfort, but abnormal sitting postures such as leaning back or crossing legs should be avoided. For long-term office work, it is still necessary to equip with office chairs that have adjustable headrests, lumbar supports, and seat depth functions to reduce the incidence of occupational diseases.
