Diamond-Shaped Office Chair
The diamond-shaped office chair typically refers to the Diamond Chair, designed by Italian-American designer Harry Bertoia in 1950. It is a classic piece of modern furniture design.

Design Background and Craftsmanship
The design inspiration for the Diamond Chair comes from the geometric form of a diamond, breaking away from the traditional design framework of wooden furniture. Its main body is crafted using a metal wire mesh welding technique, with 3mm-diameter steel wires manually welded to form a hollow structure with a pentagonal outline. This craftsmanship not only gives the chair a unique visual transparency but also ensures structural stability and lightness. In 1952, Knoll Inc. put it into mass production, further promoting the integration of modern industrial design and furniture manufacturing.
Materials and Surface Treatments
The metal frame of the Diamond Chair offers various surface treatment options: polished chrome provides a mirror-like modern feel, while colorful coatings meet personalized needs. The seating area comes in two designs: full-veneer interior directly covers the metal frame, suitable for users pursuing a minimalist style; removable cushions enhance comfort with soft padding and are easy to clean and replace. Additionally, the product has evolved into versions with soft padding, no soft padding, and full soft padding, with the full soft padding version completely wrapping the metal frame in soft materials, balancing aesthetics and practicality.
Versions and Commemorative Editions
To commemorate the 100th anniversary of Harry Bertoia's birth, Knoll Inc. released a gold-plated version, reinterpreting the classic design with luxurious materials. As of the 2020s, the original Diamond Chair is still continuously produced by Knoll Inc., covering a wide range of applications in home, office, and public spaces, becoming a model of cross-domain design.
Extended Design Series
Based on the wire structure of the Diamond Chair, Harry Bertoia further extended the design series, including the Bertoia Side Chair without armrests and the high-back Bertoia High Back Chair. These variants retain the iconic elements of the metal wire mesh while adjusting the form and function to meet the needs of different scenarios, such as the high-back version being more suitable for office environments requiring neck support.
The Diamond Chair, with its minimalist geometric aesthetics, innovative craftsmanship, and enduring practicality, has become an iconic piece in the history of modern furniture and is still widely used in various space designs today.
