Desk and Office Chair Dimensions

Admin October 16, 2026

The reasonable dimensions of desks and office chairs should be designed according to ergonomics, with specific recommendations as follows:

Desk Dimensions

  1. Length: For a single-person desk, the recommended length is 1.2-1.8 meters, with 1.4 meters and 1.6 meters being the most popular choices. This can meet daily office, study, and placement needs for computers, documents, etc. If space is limited, 1.2 meters can suffice for basic use; for multitasking or multi-person sharing, 1.8 meters is more suitable.
  2. Width: The recommended width for a desk is 0.6-0.8 meters, with 0.7 meters or 0.75 meters being the most practical. Too narrow may restrict arm movement space, while too wide occupies excessive area and affects room layout.
  3. Height: The recommended desk height is between 0.72-0.78 meters (720-780 millimeters), ideally with the desktop at the same height as the elbows when seated. If the user is taller or shorter, adjustable desk legs or a raised desktop can be used for adjustment.

Office Chair Dimensions

  1. Seat Height: The seat height is generally 0.4-0.45 meters (400-450 millimeters), or 450-480 millimeters (according to some standards). It should ensure that the feet are flat on the ground, with the thighs and calves perpendicular, avoiding leg suspension or pressure.
  2. Seat Width and Depth: The seat width should be no less than 0.45 meters, and the seat depth is recommended to be 0.4-0.48 meters to support the buttocks and the back of the thighs, reducing fatigue from prolonged sitting.
  3. Backrest Height: The recommended backrest height is between 0.9-1.1 meters, which should fit the curve of the back, especially supporting the lumbar region, to relieve pressure from prolonged sitting.

Desk-Chair Height Difference

  1. Core Principle: The desk should be 25-32 centimeters higher than the chair. This distance ensures that the thighs and calves are perpendicular, and the arms can rest naturally on the desktop, halving the pressure on the lumbar spine. For example, when the desktop is 72-76 centimeters off the ground, a 42-48 centimeter adjustable chair is ideal.
  2. Adjustment Method: If the chair height is fixed, the desktop height can be adjusted (e.g., using an adjustable-height desk) or a footrest can be added to achieve a match; if the desk height is fixed, an adjustable seat should be chosen.

A reasonably sized desk and chair combination can enhance comfort and efficiency. It is recommended to adjust flexibly according to the user's height and space conditions, prioritizing adjustable models to meet different needs.
