Dangerous Office Chairs

Admin October 16, 2026

Dangerous office chairs mainly refer to swivel and lifting chairs with explosion hazards, whose danger stems from design flaws or material issues in the pneumatic lifting rods, potentially causing serious personal injuries.

Explosion Principle of Pneumatic Lifting Rods

Pneumatic lifting rods are essentially miniature high-pressure vessels. Legitimate products are filled with high-purity inert nitrogen, which can withstand pressures of up to 2000 pounds, and their internal structures are precisely designed to effectively disperse pressure and prevent leaks. However, unscrupulous manufacturers often use ordinary compressed air instead of nitrogen to reduce costs. The oxygen in the air accelerates the oxidation and rusting of the metal inner walls, leading to a decrease in sealing performance. At the same time, compressed air accumulates heat and increases pressure during frequent lifting and lowering. When the pressure exceeds the rod's load-bearing limit, an explosion occurs.

Serious Consequences of Explosion Accidents

Such accidents have caused multiple tragedies: In 2013, Ms. Liu was using a low-quality swivel chair when the pneumatic rod exploded, sending a 3-centimeter steel column through her abdomen. More than ten metal fragments were removed from her body, and she only recovered after prolonged treatment. In 2009, a 14-year-old boy in Shandong died from excessive blood loss after being struck in a vital area by metal fragments from a suddenly exploding pneumatic rod. According to statistics, over forty similar incidents have occurred in China in the past decade, resulting in fractures and internal organ injuries in mild cases and directly endangering lives in severe cases.

Differences Between Qualified and Low-Quality Products

Pneumatic rods produced by legitimate manufacturers must pass tens of thousands of simulated tests, including extreme pressure, temperature changes, and fatigue tests, to ensure an extremely low explosion probability. Their materials are usually high-strength alloy steel, and they are equipped with multiple explosion-proof structures, such as safety valves and pressure relief holes. In contrast, low-quality products may use recycled metals or thin-walled materials to cut costs and lack necessary safety designs, posing hazards even with minor impacts or long-term use.

Importance of Addressing Safety Hazards

Although qualified products have higher safety standards, low-quality pneumatic rods are still widely found in low-priced office chairs. Consumers should choose products with 3C certification or ISO standards when purchasing and avoid buying "three-no" chairs without brands or instructions. If lifting stutters, strange noises occur, or the rod deforms during use, stop using it immediately and contact after-sales service. Enterprises also need to strengthen supply chain management to prevent low-quality components from entering the market and reduce risks at the source.
