Cylinder Office Chair Explosion
Admin October 12, 2026
The explosion of cylinder office chairs (pneumatic lifting chairs) is a serious safety hazard caused by design or usage defects in the pneumatic rods. The core reasons include insufficient gas purity, material defects, and improper use, with potentially fatal consequences. Prevention requires standardized purchasing, usage, and regular inspections.

Causes of Explosion
- Insufficient Gas Purity: Standard pneumatic rods should be filled with high-purity nitrogen (concentration โฅ 90%), but inferior products may use ordinary compressed air. The oxygen in the air can react with the metal inner wall through oxidation, leading to rusting, heat accumulation, and a sudden increase in internal pressure within the pneumatic rod. For example, prolonged use of inferior gas may corrode the inner wall of the pneumatic rod, causing pressure imbalance and triggering an explosion.
- Material Defects: Insufficient strength or poor sealing of the pneumatic rod's container wall may result in gas leakage or pressure imbalance due to frequent lifting friction, high-temperature environments (such as being near radiators), or long-term use. If the wall thickness of the pneumatic rod does not meet standards or there are defects in the welding process, it is prone to rupture under high pressure.
- Improper Use: Repeated violent lifting, sudden sitting, or sliding can cause uneven force on the pneumatic rod, accelerating wear; disassembling the cylinder by non-professionals or placing the chair near high-temperature sources (such as a fire stove) also increases risks. For example, the instantaneous pressure during sudden sitting may exceed the pneumatic rod's load limit, leading to structural damage.
Consequences of Explosion
- Extremely Lethal: During an explosion, the internal pressure of the pneumatic rod can reach 20-24 atmospheres, with an impact force sufficient to penetrate the chair surface, computer case, or even the human body. Typical cases include a teenager in Jiaozhou, Shandong, who was killed in 2009 when a pneumatic rod penetrated his buttocks, and Ms. Liu in 2013, who had a steel column propelled by the explosion pierce her abdomen, with over a dozen metal fragments removed from her body.
- Frequent Accidents: Over the past decade, more than forty similar accidents have occurred in China involving pneumatic lifting chairs such as office chairs and computer chairs, resulting in severe injuries or life-threatening situations in light cases. These accidents are mostly related to inferior products or improper use, highlighting the importance of prevention.
Preventive Measures
- Purchase Genuine Products: Prioritize manufacturers with safety certifications and avoid buying low-priced, inferior chairs. Genuine products will be labeled with the pneumatic rod's class (such as Class 3 or Class 4) and safety certification marks, reducing risks.
- Standardized Use: Avoid frequent lifting or sudden sitting, do not slide the chair; keep it away from high-temperature sources and do not disassemble the cylinder by yourself. Use it with steady operations and avoid external impacts on the pneumatic rod.
- Regular Inspections: After a period of use, have a professional inspect the pneumatic rod for cracks or looseness and promptly repair or replace it. If rusting, lifting jams, or abnormal noises are detected on the pneumatic rod's surface, stop using it immediately and have it repaired.
