Cylinder Office Chair Accident

Admin October 13, 2026

Accidents involving cylinder office chairs (pneumatic lift chairs) mainly stem from design flaws or improper use of the pneumatic rods, which can lead to serious injuries or even life-threatening situations.

Accident Cases and Injuries

Explosions of pneumatic lift chairs are not isolated incidents. For example, in 2013, Ms. Liu in Xiamen was using a rotating chair purchased online when the pneumatic rod suddenly exploded. A 3-centimeter-thick steel rod penetrated her body, with fragments embedding into her uterus, and the floor was stained with blood. According to statistics, 47 such accidents have occurred over the past decade, with minor cases resulting in severe injuries and major cases directly endangering lives.

Analysis of Accident Causes

  1. Poor-quality pneumatic rods: Some manufacturers reduce costs by using pneumatic rods with substandard wall thickness or inferior metal materials. These rods cannot withstand normal pressure and are prone to rupture under long-term use or external impact.
  2. Insufficient gas purity: Legitimate pneumatic rods are filled with high-purity nitrogen (concentration โ‰ฅ 90%), while inferior products may use ordinary compressed air instead. The oxygen in the air can corrode internal components, accelerate the aging of the pneumatic rod, and even trigger explosions under pressure changes.
  3. Frequent friction and high temperatures: Continuous high-pressure bouncing or frequent height adjustments can cause internal friction and heat generation within the pneumatic rod, leading to rapid gas expansion and a sudden increase in pressure. If the pneumatic rod is not tightly sealed or the material has aged, it may rupture directly.

Structure and Risks of Pneumatic Rods

Pneumatic rods consist of inner and outer sleeves, with an internal cylinder that adjusts height through piston rod movement. Risk points include:

  • Thin cylinder walls: Unable to withstand normal pressure and prone to rupture under pressure changes.
  • Poor sealing: Leads to gas leakage or the entry of external air, accelerating internal corrosion.
  • Insufficient gas purity: Oxygen corrodes components, reducing structural stability.
Once a pneumatic rod ruptures, high-speed shrapnel can pierce the seat cushion and penetrate the human body, causing severe injuries.

Prevention Recommendations

  1. Choose legitimate products: Look for 3C certification or relevant safety labels when purchasing, and avoid low-priced, inferior products.
  2. Avoid frequent adjustments: Reduce continuous high-pressure bouncing or frequent lifting and lowering operations to lower the risk of internal friction and temperature rise in the pneumatic rod.
  3. Regular inspection and maintenance: Observe the pneumatic rod's exterior for cracks, deformation, or air leaks. If any abnormalities are found, stop using it immediately and replace it.

By using the chairs properly and conducting regular maintenance, the risk of accidents involving pneumatic lift chairs can be effectively reduced.
