Computer Office Chair Decline

Admin October 14, 2026

The most common cause of a computer office chair declining is slow air leakage due to internal seal failure in the gas lift cylinder, followed by improper operation or issues with the locking mechanism, which can be resolved through targeted repairs or component replacement. Here are the specific causes and solutions:

1. Gas Lift Cylinder Issues
Aging or seal failure in the gas lift cylinder is the primary reason for chair decline. Leakage of high-pressure nitrogen gas or damage to the oil seal inside can result in a slow descent, weak lifting power, or even a hissing sound or jerky movement when sitting. The gas lift cylinder is a one-time sealed component that cannot be repaired and must be replaced entirely.

  • Selection and Tools: Choose mainstream brands certified by Germany's TUV, SGS, BIFMA, or ISO9001 (such as Samhongsa from Korea or WDE from Taiwan). Prepare a large pipe wrench, rubber mallet, and lubricant (such as WD-40).
  • Removing the Old Cylinder: Turn off the power to the electric chair, invert the chair, and use the pipe wrench to grip the middle metal tube of the gas lift cylinder. Turn counterclockwise to unscrew it; if severely rusted, spray lubricant to soften the joint first.
  • Installing the New Cylinder: Insert the new gas lift cylinder into its original position and ensure it is securely installed.

2. Operation and Environmental Issues

  • Incorrect Operation: Pneumatic lifting chairs should be raised when empty and lowered when occupied. Reversing this order can cause lifting abnormalities. Use according to the correct logic.
  • Uneven Ground: Uneven force distribution on the chair can affect its lifting function. Check the ground levelness and adjust the chair's position.

3. Mechanical Connection Issues

  • Loose Screws: Loose screws at connections such as the base, five-star foot, or armrests can cause the chair to wobble or decline. Invert the chair and tighten all screws with an Allen wrench.
  • Locking Mechanism Issues: Some chairs have a locking knob at the bottom of the gas lift cylinder or beside the adjustment handle. If accidentally tightened, the lifting function can be locked. Adjust the knob to a suitable tightness.
  • Seat Installation Issues: If a detachable seat is not installed properly or the clips are not locked, it can cause decline. Check the connection between the seat and the chassis and ensure the clips are fully locked.

4. Other Issues and Emergency Measures

  • Damaged Adjustment Components: If the adjustment handle breaks or internal gears or springs are damaged, contact the merchant, manufacturer's after-sales service, or a professional repair technician for handling. Avoid disassembling it yourself to prevent further damage.
  • Temporary Elevation: Placing hard objects such as bricks under the lifting rod can serve as a short-term emergency measure, but ensure the padding is stable. Avoid the risk of tipping over.
  • Replacing with a New Chair: If the chair has been used for many years and multiple repairs have been ineffective, or if the repair cost is too high, it is advisable to choose a reliable brand and replace it with a new chair.
