Computer Office Chair Adjustment

Admin October 11, 2026

The adjustment of a computer office chair should be based on ergonomic principles, taking into account the functional needs of different body parts for scientific settings. Here are the specific adjustment methods:

1. Seat Height Adjustment Seat height is a core parameter affecting sitting comfort. When adjusting, look for the hand control device at the bottom or side of the seat (such as a lever or knob) and change the height by pulling up or turning. The standard sitting posture requires the feet to naturally rest on the ground, the thighs to be parallel to the ground, and the knee joints to be at 90ยฐ-100ยฐ. When adjusting, make multiple fine adjustments, moving 2-3 centimeters each time to avoid imbalance caused by rapid lifting. If adjusting from a standing position, ensure that the front of the chair is just below the knees, and the leg pressure is evenly distributed after sitting down. If the seat cannot be lowered to the ideal height, use a footrest to supplement; if it is too high, check whether the chair is suitable for the current desk height.

2. Seat Depth Adjustment Seat depth adjustment is for the front-to-back position of the seat, suitable for users of different body types. The adjustment goal is to have the back naturally straight, the buttocks fully in contact with the seat surface, and the gap between the waist and the backrest not exceeding 2-3 finger widths. When operating, look for the sliding track control device under the seat and lock the position by pushing, pulling, or turning the knob. If the seat depth is too short, the waist will be suspended; if it is too long, it may compress the blood vessels and nerves behind the knees, causing numbness.

3. Backrest and Headrest Adjustment The backrest reclining function can disperse spinal pressure. It is recommended to keep the reclining angle โ‰ค15ยฐ when focusing on work and adjust it to 25ยฐ-30ยฐ when relaxing. Adjustment methods include lever-type (side lever), knob-type (knob under the backrest), or pneumatic-type (back pressure sensing). The headrest needs to be adjusted in height and angle simultaneously: The height should align the center of the back of the head with the center of the headrest, and the angle should support the natural curvature of the cervical spine, avoiding forward or backward tilting of the head.

4. Armrest Adjustment The height of the armrests should match the desk. The standard posture is to have the arms naturally hanging down, the elbows at a 90ยฐ right angle, and the forearms parallel to the ground. If the armrests are too high, the shoulders will be raised; if they are too low, it will increase the burden on the neck. Some high-end chairs support forward, backward, left, and right rotation adjustments of the armrests to adapt to different scenarios such as typing and reading. If space is limited, the height of the armrests can be lowered or a detachable design can be chosen.

5. Footrest Adjustment For chairs equipped with a footrest, ensure that when the feet are flat on the ground, the thighs and calves are at 90ยฐ-110ยฐ, avoiding leg suspension or excessive bending. The height of the footrest should be adjusted in conjunction with the seat, and the angle should fit the arch of the foot to prevent foot muscle fatigue.

6. Reclining Angle Selection Adjust the reclining angle dynamically according to the usage scenario: Choose a 5ยฐ-10ยฐ slight recline for focused work to keep the line of sight horizontal; adjust it to 15ยฐ-20ยฐ for thinking or discussion; and for short breaks, it is recommended to use 25ยฐ-30ยฐ in conjunction with a footrest. Some chairs support multi-gear locking and need to be switched through the control device under the backrest.

After adjustment, sit quietly for 5-10 minutes to feel the comfort level. If there is waist soreness, shoulder pain, or leg numbness, readjust the parameters. For long-term use, it is recommended to get up and move around every 1-2 hours. Combining the correct sitting posture with chair adjustment can effectively prevent common musculoskeletal diseases among office workers.
