Computer Office Chair Accident

Admin October 11, 2026

Computer office chair accidents mainly refer to explosion problems caused by component defects in pneumatic lifting swivel chairs. The core causes and preventive measures are as follows:

I. Causes of Accidents

  1. Design Defects in Pneumatic Rods

    • Thin Tube Walls or Poor-Quality Materials: Some low-quality pneumatic rods use insufficient wall thickness or low-strength steel to reduce costs, making the container unable to withstand internal gas pressure and prone to rupture under frequent lifting or high-temperature conditions.
    • Insufficient Purity of Inert Gas: Legitimate pneumatic rods should be filled with high-purity nitrogen, but inferior products may be mixed with compressed air or oxygen. Nitrogen is chemically stable, while oxygen can support combustion under high temperatures or friction, increasing the risk of explosion.
    • Defects in Sealing Process: If the seal at the end of the pneumatic rod is not tight, gas may slowly leak, causing internal pressure imbalance or sudden ejection under external impact.
  2. Improper Use Environment and Operation

    • High-Temperature Environment: When exposed to direct sunlight or near heat sources such as radiators for extended periods, the gas inside the pneumatic rod expands due to heat, causing a sudden increase in pressure that may exceed the tube's limit.
    • Frequent Lifting: Adjusting the seat height multiple times in a short period generates friction and heat inside the pneumatic rod. If the gas purity is insufficient or the tube wall has defects, an explosion may occur.

II. Typical Cases

  • 2007, Zhoushan, Zhejiang: A pneumatic rod in an office chair exploded, injuring the user.
  • 2009, Jiaozhou, Shandong: A 14-year-old boy was fatally injured when the lifting rod of a pneumatic chair pierced his body during adjustment.
  • 2017, Anhui: The impact force from an exploding office chair damaged a computer case, but fortunately caused no casualties.
  • 2020 Market Inspection: The State Administration for Market Regulation found that some staff chairs produced by enterprises posed explosion risks, with a failure rate of 23.3%. Among them, 17 batches were swivel chairs, with issues mainly concentrated on the pneumatic rods' inability to withstand high and low temperatures and the lack of explosion-proof steel plates.

III. Preventive Measures

  1. Choose Legitimate Products: Prioritize brands that have passed national safety certifications and consider a price point of no less than 200 yuan to avoid purchasing unbranded, unlicensed, and untested products.
  2. Inspect Pneumatic Rod Quality:
    • Test the smoothness of lifting and lowering without jamming or unusual noises.
    • Ensure that a explosion-proof steel plate with a thickness of at least 2 millimeters is installed between the seat cushion and the pneumatic rod to effectively block explosion fragments.
  3. Adopt Proper Usage Habits: Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight or heat sources, reduce frequent lifting operations, and regularly inspect the pneumatic rod for deformation or gas leakage.
