Collapsed Office Chair
For a collapsed office chair, first inspect and assess it, then take repair or replacement measures according to different problems. For mesh collapse, handle it according to the degree, and take temporary relief measures and seek medical attention if necessary.

Office chair collapse is usually caused by aging and deformation of the filling material, fatigue and breakage of the support structure, loosening of the mesh, or damage to core components such as the gas lift. When facing a collapsed office chair, there's no need to rush to discard it. First, inspect and assess it, and then decide whether to repair or replace it. Before starting the repair work, ensure that the area around the chair is safe. Conduct a systematic inspection, including observing and pressing, listening and shaking. For lift chairs, also conduct a special inspection of the gas lift, etc.
According to the different problems identified during the inspection, corresponding repair methods can be adopted:
- Repair of loose structures: Tighten loose screws. Use an appropriate screwdriver or wrench to tighten all the loose screws on the chair legs, armrests, backrests, etc. Repair worn screw holes or mortise-and-tenon joints. If the screw hole is worn and enlarged, take a few toothpicks or thin wooden sticks, dip them in white glue, and insert them into the screw hole. Break off the excess parts to be flush with the hole opening. After they dry thoroughly, screw in the screws again. For solid wood chairs with mortise-and-tenon joints, if the tenon is loose, clean off the old glue and debris, apply new white glue, knock the tenon back into place, and secure it firmly with a rope or clamp. Remove it after the glue dries. Reinforce the structure by adding corner braces. If the main stress-bearing parts of the chair, such as the connection between the chair legs and the cross-braces, are loose or insufficient in strength, use straight corner braces for reinforcement.
- Handling of mesh collapse: For mild collapse (sagging < 1cm, only locally loose), you can try to adjust it yourself. Find the mesh fixing straps under the seat cushion, tighten the screws, re-tighten the straps in a criss-cross pattern, and fix them with nails at the joints. You can also add a thin high-density foam pad to the collapsed area. For moderate collapse (sagging 1 - 2cm, the mesh is generally loose but not damaged), if the chair is within the warranty period, give priority to contacting the brand's after-sales service to apply for a free mesh replacement or adjustment service. If it is out of warranty, you can purchase a replacement mesh of the same size yourself. The replacement cost of an ordinary dragon-patterned special mesh is about 100 - 200 yuan, and that of a U-mesh is about 200 - 300 yuan. You can install it yourself or have a third-party furniture repair service come to replace it. For severe collapse (sagging > 2cm, mesh damage/frame looseness), repair is not recommended. It is more cost-effective to replace it with a new chair directly.
If you can't replace the chair temporarily, choose a memory foam or gel seat cushion that is 3 to 5 centimeters thick, preferably with a hollow design in the middle. Usually, sit all the way back on the chair surface, place a cushion of appropriate thickness behind your waist to support the lumbar fossa, get up and move around every 30 minutes, and do hip bridges to exercise your gluteal muscles when you get home from work. If the pain lasts for more than two weeks without relief, it is best to go to the orthopedics department for an examination.
