Moldy Cloth Office Chair

Admin October 12, 2026

The following steps can be taken to deal with a moldy cloth office chair:

Safety Pre-treatment

First, use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment or a clean, slightly damp cloth to gently remove the surface dust and loose mold spores from the chair seat. This prevents the mold from being pushed deeper into the fabric during subsequent cleaning. Be careful to control the pressure to avoid damaging the fabric fibers.

Selection and Use of Cleaning Agents

  • Economical Homemade Methods
    • White Vinegar Solution: Mix white vinegar with water in a ratio of 1:1 or 1:3. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle and spray it onto the mold spots. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes to allow penetration. The acidity of white vinegar can break down the cell structure of mold, making it suitable for mild mold spots.
    • Baking Soda Paste: Add about 2 tablespoons of baking soda to each liter of warm water and stir until it forms a paste. Apply the paste to the mold spots and gently scrub with an old toothbrush. Baking soda has the ability to absorb and neutralize odors, making it suitable for treating stubborn mold spots.
    • Combined Formula: Mix white vinegar and baking soda in a ratio of about 2:1 to form a paste. The acid-base reaction foam produced by the two can penetrate deep into the fabric fibers to break down the mold spots. However, be sure to clean up the residue promptly after the reaction.
  • Professional Mold Removers: For stubborn or large-area mold spots, products such as ASD-QX Mold Removal Cleaner, Kobayashi Konfu Clothing Mold Remover, or Lvnakang Wall Cloth and Wallpaper Mold Remover can be used. Some products require application by pasting to allow the solution to fully penetrate. General automotive interior cleaners also have a certain effect on fabric mold spots.

Wiping, Scrubbing, Rinsing, and Disinfecting

After letting the cleaning agent sit, gently scrub or wipe the moldy area along the fabric texture with a soft brush or cloth. Then, wipe the area multiple times with a clean, water-dampened cloth or sponge to completely remove any cleaning agent residue. You can use a diluted disinfectant (such as a mixture of bleach and water in a ratio of 1:3) or 75% medical alcohol to gently wipe the cleaned area. Note that bleach may cause colored fabrics to fade, so test it in an inconspicuous area before use.

Special Treatment for Different Fabrics

  • Cotton and Linen Products: Dry them in a well-ventilated area and then brush off the mold spots. Alternatively, rub a few mung bean sprouts on the mold spots and then rinse with clean water.
  • Woolen/Wool Products: First, dry them in the sun and brush off the surface mold. For mold spots caused by oil and sweat, use high-quality gasoline to scrub. After the gasoline evaporates, iron with a damp cloth.
  • Synthetic/Blended Fabrics: Use a brush dipped in concentrated soapy water to scrub and then wipe clean with warm water.
  • Silk: For mild mold spots, gently wipe with a flannel cloth. For heavier mold spots, apply a 5% dilute ammonia solution, let it sit for 3-5 minutes, and then rinse with clean water.

Maintenance Tips

After cleaning, make sure the chair is completely dry. You can open the windows for ventilation or use a car fan to blow on it. Usually, keep some bamboo charcoal bags or dehumidifier boxes in the car. Never expose the chair to direct sunlight as it may cause fading and deformation. Also, be cautious when using bleach as it may damage the chair. If there are still mold stains after cleaning, it may mean that the mold has taken root, and it is advisable to seek professional help.
