Cleaning Office Chair Wheels

Admin October 16, 2026

Cleaning office chair wheels can be carried out in the following steps, which are divided into four parts: dealing with tangled hair, cleaning dirt, lubricating and resetting, and daily maintenance:

1. Dealing with Tangled Hair

  • Surface Hair: Bend a paper clip into a small hook, insert it along the gap of the wheel axle, and hook out the hair. If the hair is loose, after mopping the floor, push the chair to roll. The wet and sticky floor can take away some floating hair.
  • Stubborn Tangling: If the hair has been tangled for more than half a year and is tight, use a flat-head screwdriver to gently pry open the wheel cover, leaving a 3-4mm gap. Insert a paper knife diagonally to cut the hair, and then use tweezers to pick out the broken hair. Alternatively, you can directly pull out the wheel vertically (most are designed with snap fasteners), clean it, and then gently tap the slot to reset it.
  • Complete Disassembly and Cleaning: Turn the chair upside down, hold the roller bracket and pull out the wheel outward (no tools are needed for snap-fastener types). If it is stuck, use a flat-head screwdriver with a soft cloth to pry the edge of the snap fastener. After taking it out, use tweezers to pick out the long hair or fibers in the gap along the direction of the roller rotation to avoid further tangling.

2. Cleaning Wheel Dirt

  • Friction Wiping Method: Wrap the wheel with a damp and air-dried face towel (with the concave-convex side facing out), fix it with a rubber band, and then sit on the chair and move back and forth to remove the dirt by friction. Repeat the operation until it is clean.
  • Brushing Method: Use an old toothbrush dipped in a small amount of neutral detergent (avoid strong alkalis that can cause corrosion) to gently brush the surface of the roller and the gap of the bearing to remove dust and oil stains. Rinse with clean water, dry the moisture, and let it air dry in a ventilated place for 10 minutes (avoid getting water into the bearing part).

3. Lubricating and Resetting

  • Lubrication Treatment: Drip 1-2 drops of special lubricating oil for office equipment (avoid using cooking oil which can attract dust) onto the bearing, and rotate the wheel to evenly distribute the lubricating oil.
  • Installation and Testing: Align the wheel with the snap fastener of the bracket and gently push it in. Listen for a "click" sound to confirm that it is firmly installed. Turn the chair upright and push it to test. If there is still stuttering, check for any remaining debris.

4. Daily Maintenance Suggestions

  • Regular Cleaning: Spend 5 minutes cleaning the wheels once a month to reduce the accumulation of hair and dust.
  • Laying Floor Mats: Lay small floor mats in the areas where the office chair often stays. This can reduce the amount of hair and dust rolled into the wheel axle by more than 60% and extend the cleaning cycle.
