Clean Office Chair Wheels

Admin October 22, 2026

To remove hair and dirt from office chair wheels, you can refer to the following methods:

Simple Hair Removal

  • Surface-tangled hair: If hair is tangled on the surface of the wheels, you can use a paper clip bent into a small hook. Insert it along the gap of the wheel axle to hook out the hair. If the floor is just mopped and wet, push the chair around a couple of times, and the floating hair and debris on the wheels will stick to the floor.
  • Tightly-tangled hair: For tightly-tangled hair, you can use very small scissors, although it is relatively time-consuming. Alternatively, you can gently pry open the wheel cover with a flat-head screwdriver, leaving a 3-4mm gap. Insert a box cutter diagonally into the gap to cut the hair, and then use tweezers to pick out the broken hair.

Disassembling the Wheels for Cleaning

  • Removing the wheels: First, turn the office chair upside down (with the seat facing down, taking care to protect the seat fabric). Hold the wheel bracket with your hand and gently pull out the wheels outward (most office chair wheels are designed with snap-on mechanisms and do not require tools). If the wheels are stuck tightly, you can gently pry the edge of the snap-on with a flat-head screwdriver (pad it with a soft cloth to avoid scratching the bracket).
  • Cleaning hair and debris: After removing the wheels, place all of them on a table and check each one for trapped hair and debris. Use tweezers to pick out long hair strands and carpet fibers from the gaps of the wheels one by one (pick in the direction of wheel rotation to avoid further tangling of the hair).
  • Washing the wheels: Use an old toothbrush dipped in a small amount of neutral detergent (avoid using strong alkaline cleaners to prevent corrosion of the wheels) to gently brush the surface of the wheels and the gaps in the bearings, removing residual dust and grease. Finally, rinse the wheels with clean water (avoid getting water into the bearing part), dry them with a dry cloth, and let them air dry in a well-ventilated place for 10 minutes.

Cleaning Wheel Dirt

After removing the tangled hair, prepare a used face towel, wet it and let it air dry slightly. Use the side with a bumpy texture to rub against the wheels for better friction. Then wrap the face towel around the wheels and secure it with a rubber band. Sit on the chair and move it back and forth. The dirt on the wheels will rub off onto the face towel. Repeat this process several times, and the wheels will be clean.

Installation and Maintenance

  • Installing the wheels: After the wheels are dry,ๆปด (drip) 1-2 drops of lubricating oil at the bearings (choose lubricating oil specifically for office equipment and avoid using cooking oil to prevent dust absorption). Rotate the wheels by hand to evenly distribute the lubricating oil. Align the wheels with the bracket snap-ons and gently push them in until you hear a "click" sound, confirming that the wheels are securely installed. Finally, turn the office chair back upright and push it to test if the wheels roll smoothly. If there is still stuttering, check if there is any residual debris that has not been cleaned.
  • Daily maintenance: It is best to spend 5 minutes cleaning the chair wheels every month. If you find it troublesome, you can lay a small floor mat in the area where the chair at your workstation often stays, which can reduce a large amount of hair and dust from getting into the wheel axles.
