Classic Office Chair Assembly

Admin October 12, 2026

The assembly steps for a classic office chair generally follow a bottom-up principle and can be divided into the following five main stages:

1. Install the Chair Base and Gas Lift First, insert each of the casters (usually five) into the corresponding holes on the chair base, ensuring that the clips are fully engaged to prevent loosening. After assembling the chair base, vertically insert the gas lift into the center hole of the base. Note that the metal end of the gas lift should face downward and the plastic end upward to provide stable support for the subsequent installation of the seat. Some models may require a small amount of grease to be applied to the top of the gas lift to reduce friction.

2. Secure the Seat Plate and Seat Align the seat plate (which contains the components for controlling height adjustment and rotation) with the screw holes on the bottom of the seat and use the provided long screws (usually four) for initial fixation. Key Operation: Manually screw each screw in by 3-4 turns first to ensure that the seat plate and seat are properly aligned before tightening them one by one. This prevents the seat plate from being misaligned due to unilateral force. Some designs may require tapping the edges of the seat plate with a rubber mallet to ensure it fits snugly against the seat.

3. Connect the Backrest and Seat This step needs to be completed in two parts:

  • Bottom Fixation: Use short screws to initially connect the bottom of the backrest to the front part of the seat through the screw holes on the bottom of the armrest brackets. Do not fully tighten the screws at this time to allow for angle adjustment.
  • Rear Locking: Align the mounting holes on the back of the backrest with the bracket holes on the back of the seat and use double wrenches (or a combination of an Allen wrench and a regular wrench) to lock and tighten the screws. Operation Tip: This step requires two people to cooperate or the use of a vise to hold the seat in place to prevent rotation from causing the screws to be misaligned.

4. Assemble the Seat and Gas Lift Vertically slide the part of the seat with the backrest connected onto the top of the gas lift. A clicking sound or significant resistance indicates that it is properly installed. Some models may require rotating the seat by 90ยฐ to activate the height adjustment function of the gas lift. At this point, test whether the height adjustment is smooth. If there is any jamming, check whether the gas lift is vertical or whether the seat plate is misaligned.

5. Install the Armrests and Headrest

  • Armrest Installation: Press the elastic clips under the armrest surfaces and vertically insert the armrests into the bracket holes on both sides of the seat. Release the clips after hearing a clicking sound and test whether they are secure. Some designs may require short screws to be used for fixation from the bottom of the armrests.
  • Headrest Fixation: Align the metal rod of the headrest with the mounting slot at the top of the backrest and press it down until it is fully embedded. Then, use screws to pass through the headrest fixing clips and connect them to the backrest, ensuring that the headrest can be adjusted up and down but remains stable.

Precautions:

  • Always refer to the instruction manual diagrams to confirm the screw specifications (e.g., which screw numbers correspond to different holes) throughout the process.
  • Avoid using power tools to directly tighten the screws to prevent plastic parts from cracking due to excessive torque.
  • After assembly, test all adjustment functions (height adjustment, rotation, and recline) to ensure they are working properly, check whether the armrests are level, and whether the headrest height is adjustable.
