Chair Office Chair Material

Admin October 19, 2026

The materials of office chairs are diverse, mainly including solid wood, plastics, and various composite materials used in executive chairs.

Solid wood is a material used in some office chairs. Solid wood is naturally eco-friendly, featuring unique textures and a sense of quality that can add a natural and warm ambiance to the office environment. However, solid wood office chairs are relatively expensive and require a certain amount of effort in maintenance. They should be protected from moisture and prolonged exposure to sunlight to prevent wood deformation and cracking.

Plastic materials are widely used in office chairs, with common types including PP plastic, PE plastic, ABS plastic, and tempered plastic. PP plastic is relatively durable, withstanding high temperatures up to 100 degrees Celsius, and is resistant to aging even when used outdoors, making it suitable for various office scenarios. PE plastic is inexpensive and lightweight, but its high-temperature resistance is poor, potentially softening above 60 degrees Celsius and prone to fading and deformation after about two years of use. ABS plastic has a smooth and attractive surface, but it is prone to cracking in cold weather. Tempered plastic has the strongest load-bearing capacity but is heavier, often used more in factories.

As a broad category of office chairs, executive chairs have a more complex material composition. In terms of upholstery, materials such as leather, artificial leather (PU leather), linen, or mesh are commonly used. Mesh offers good breathability and a wide range of color options, but it is not very convenient for daily cleaning and maintenance, and small debris can easily fall into the seat cushion. Genuine leather is more expensive and has good breathability, but the color options are limited. Artificial leather (PU leather) has corresponding characteristics. The seat is usually composed of a wooden board, sponge, and upholstery, with various options for the upholstery such as linen, mesh, and leather. The backrest may use a steel frame or plastic frame combined with mesh, ensuring both the strength of the backrest and comfortable support. The base is commonly made of metal with a mechanical explosion-proof mechanism to ensure safety. The casters are mostly made of PA material, supporting omnidirectional rotation for easy movement of the office chair. The chair legs are generally made of nylon, which is sturdy and durable, capable of bearing a certain amount of weight.
