Chair Office Chair Explosion

Admin October 12, 2026

Office chair explosions are mainly related to design flaws in the gas pressure rods or the use of inferior materials, and prevention requires selecting qualified products and inspecting key components.

The gas pressure rod is essentially a miniature high-pressure vessel that enables seat height adjustment by using internal gas to push a piston. Legitimate products use high-purity inert nitrogen as the filling gas, which is chemically stable, can withstand pressures of up to 2,000 pounds, and remains safely controllable. However, some unscrupulous manufacturers reduce costs by replacing nitrogen with ordinary compressed air. The oxygen in the air continuously reacts with the metal inner wall through oxidation, causing rust and heat buildup, gradually transforming the gas pressure rod into a sealed high-pressure environment. As internal pressure rises, the outer tube wall becomes thinner and more brittle due to corrosion, potentially leading to an explosion under high-temperature conditions (such as direct sunlight) or frequent friction (such as adjusting the seat height).

Manufacturing defects in the gas pressure rod are also a significant contributing factor. For example, insufficient tube wall thickness reduces structural strength, making it unable to withstand normal pressure; the absence of an explosion-proof steel plate removes the final safety barrierโ€”when the gas pressure rod unexpectedly ruptures, the explosion-proof steel plate can block flying debris and prevent direct injury to the human body. According to a spot check by the State Administration for Market Regulation, in 2020, the failure rate of office chairs reached 23.3%, with 17 batches of swivel chairs having issues such as substandard temperature resistance of the gas pressure rods or the lack of explosion-proof steel plates, directly threatening user safety.

Several serious accidents have occurred in history: a chair explosion in Zhoushan, Zhejiang, in 2007; a teenager in Shandong was impaled by a rod and died in 2009; Ms. Liu suffered severe abdominal injuries from a gas pressure rod in 2013; and an office chair explosion in Anhui damaged a computer case in 2017. All these cases were related to quality defects in the gas pressure rods.

Prevention measures should focus on three key points:

  1. Choose products from reputable manufacturers: Prioritize purchasing branded office chairs priced above 200 yuan to avoid low-quality, cheap alternatives;
  2. Inspect the performance of the gas pressure rod: Observe whether the seat height adjustment is smooth without any stuttering or unusual noises;
  3. Confirm the installation of an explosion-proof steel plate: Check whether there is an explosion-proof steel plate with a thickness of at least 2 millimeters at the connection between the seat cushion and the gas pressure rod, as this is a critical safety component.

By strictly controlling product quality and key components, the risk of office chair explosions can be significantly reduced.
