Office Chair Disassembly Guide

Admin October 09, 2026

The method for disassembling an office chair depends on its specific structure, with common operations including tool-free disassembly, snap-button disassembly, and base replacement. Here are the detailed steps:

1. Tool-Free Disassembly Method
Some ordinary office chairs or computer chairs are designed simply and can be disassembled without professional tools. For example, the connection between the backrest and seat cushion may be fixed with plastic snap buttons or screws, which can be operated directly by hand or with common tools (such as a screwdriver). If the chair has a modular design, first observe how the components are connected; they can usually be separated by rotating, lifting, or pressing. Note: It is recommended to take photos of the initial state before disassembly to avoid difficulties in subsequent assembly.

2. Snap-Button Disassembly Steps for Ergonomic Chairs
For ergonomic chairs with snap buttons, the typical process for disassembling the seat cushion is as follows:

  • Lay the chair down: Invert the chair so that the seat cushion faces upwards for easier operation;
  • Adjust the seat depth: Slide the seat cushion to its maximum extended position to expose the snap-button locations;
  • Unlock the snap buttons: There are usually hidden snap buttons on both sides of the seat cushion. Press both snap buttons simultaneously with both hands and slide the seat cushion forward to separate it from the base.
    Tip: If the snap buttons are tight, use a plastic prying tool to assist, avoiding scratches on the chair surface from metal tools.

3. Base Replacement Process
If you need to replace the five-star base or gas lift of the chair, a more systematic disassembly is required:

  • Separate the seat cushion from the base: After removing the seat cushion using the snap-button disassembly method, observe how the base is connected to the gas lift. Some chairs are fixed with threads and require rotating the base; if it is a quick-release structure, you may need to press an unlock button;
  • Remove the old base: Place the chair upright again, gently tap the connection between the gas lift and the five-star base with a rubber mallet, or use a special wrench to rotate it counterclockwise to separate them;
  • Install the new base: Insert the new gas lift into the center hole of the five-star base, ensuring vertical alignment, and then place the base onto the top of the gas lift and secure it.
    Note: Keep the chair stable during operation to avoid sudden ejection of the gas lift causing injury.

4. Damage-Free Disassembly Suggestions for Return Scenarios
If you need to return the chair and keep the parts intact, it is recommended to:

  • Disassemble in reverse order of assembly: Refer to the product manual or assembly video and disassemble step by step;
  • Store parts separately: Use small bags to store small components such as screws and snap buttons separately and label their locations;
  • Avoid violent disassembly: If you encounter stubborn connections, prioritize contacting the manufacturer for guidance to prevent damage to the parts.

Summary: Disassembling an office chair requires selecting the appropriate method based on the specific model. For snap-button structures, prioritize pressing and sliding; for threaded connections, rotate to separate. For complex operations, it is recommended to refer to tutorials or contact after-sales service.
