CCTV Office Chair Safety Risks
CCTV has exposed that unqualified office chairs pose significant safety risks, including explosions.

I. General Overview of Unqualified Office Chairs
According to a spot check by the State Administration for Market Regulation, out of 90 batches of office chairs produced by 90 enterprises across 11 provinces and municipalities, 21 batches were found to be unqualified, resulting in a non-compliance rate of 23.3%. Among these, office swivel chairs were particularly problematic, accounting for 17 of the non-compliant batches. Issues included base fractures, caster detachment, excessive formaldehyde levels, falls, and even explosions, posing serious threats to user safety.
II. Explosion Risks and Causes of Pneumatic Swivel Chairs
Pneumatic swivel chairs, which use gas springs (pneumatic rods) for height adjustment, are widely popular due to their mature technology and low cost. However, substandard pneumatic rods are the primary cause of explosions:
- Insufficient Nitrogen Purity: High-purity nitrogen should be used in genuine pneumatic rods, but inferior products may contain air or other gases. Under high temperatures or frequent friction, the cylinder temperature rises sharply, increasing pressure and potentially triggering an explosion.
- Cylinder Material Defects: If the cylinder wall is not strong enough or made of inferior materials, it may not withstand high pressure, leading to rupture.
- Poor Sealing: Inadequate sealing at the closure can cause gas to escape, further increasing the risk of explosion.
- Filling with High-Pressure Air: Some unscrupulous manufacturers cut costs by filling pneumatic rods directly with high-pressure air, which is far less stable than nitrogen and significantly increases the likelihood of explosion.
III. Typical Cases and Protective Measures
- Typical Incidents: In 2009, a boy in Shandong was injured when a swivel chair exploded, with the pneumatic rod piercing his buttocks and chest. In 2017, an office chair explosion in Anhui caused the base to fracture and damaged a computer host.
- Protective Methods: Installing an explosion-proof steel plate with a thickness of at least 2 millimeters between the pneumatic rod and the seat cushion can effectively block explosion shock. However, some enterprises fail to install this device, leading to non-compliance in safety tests.
IV. Purchase Recommendations
Consumers should prioritize products that have passed national safety certifications, check for explosion-proof designs in the pneumatic rods, and avoid purchasing low-priced, inferior swivel chairs to reduce safety risks.
