Causes of Office Chair Wear and Tear
Admin October 09, 2026
The causes of office chair wear and tear mainly include excessive wear, poor quality, long-term disuse, incorrect use, structural disintegration, component aging, improper use, and long-term usage.

- Excessive Wear: During daily use, office chairs are constantly subjected to friction and compression forces. Over time, the materials on the chair's surface gradually wear out, affecting the comfort of sitting posture and the stability of the chair. For example, the fabric or leather on the seat and backrest may wear through, and metal components may lose their luster or develop scratches due to friction.
- Poor Quality: Some office chairs are produced with improper material selection or defective craftsmanship, resulting in substandard quality. These chairs have a shorter lifespan and are prone to various issues such as seat damage and leg breakage, failing to meet the demands of long-term use.
- Long-term Disuse: Even if an office chair is of good quality, prolonged disuse can lead to problems such as aging and deformation. For instance, plastic components may become brittle after prolonged exposure to the air, metal components may rust, and springs may lose their elasticity.
- Incorrect Use: Some improper usage methods by employees can cause damage to office chairs. For example, carrying the chair while moving may cause the legs to deform or break; sitting on the backrest of the chair can subject it to excessive pressure, leading to loosening or damage at the connection points.
- Structural Disintegration: The legs of the chair may crack or even break over time due to long-term impact forces, such as when a heavy person habitually sits down with a thud. The springs inside the chair axles may age, and combined with frequent leg swinging on the chair, the repeated shifting of the center of gravity can cause the springs to lose their elasticity, leading to issues with the backrest connection. Additionally, if the screws connecting the backrest and chair axles are of poor quality, they may loosen over time or even fall off completely and become stripped.
- Component Aging: Office chairs with wheels experience increased wear on the wheels as they are rolled back and forth on the floor. As the usage time increases, the elasticity of the seat cushion and backrest gradually decreases, affecting comfort.
- Improper Use: Employees who do not pay attention to their sitting posture and maintain an incorrect posture for long periods not only risk causing physical fatigue and health issues such as cervical spondylosis but also accelerate the aging of the office chair, causing it to lose its value prematurely.
- Long-term Usage: Even high-quality office chairs cannot withstand long-term use indefinitely. Over time, they will also experience damage and aging.
