Caster Office Chair Repair

Admin October 19, 2026

Repairing a caster office chair requires a step-by-step approach, with the core processes including inspection, disassembly, lubrication and installation, testing, and handling special issues. The specific methods are as follows:

1. Inspect the Caster State

First, place the chair upright and upside down to observe whether all the casters are in contact with the ground. Check for any bent, deformed, or damaged caster legs. If there are cracks on the caster surface, bearing seizure, or uneven rotation, it indicates that the component is damaged and needs to be replaced entirely. It is recommended to purchase new accessories that exactly match the original caster model and size to avoid installation difficulties or abnormal use due to non-compliant specifications.

2. Remove the Old Casters

Choose the disassembly method according to the caster's fixing method:

  • Direct Pull-out Type: Grasp the caster with your hand and pull it straight up with force. If it is stuck due to long-term use, insert a flat-head screwdriver into the gap between the caster leg and the chair's contact point, and slowly pry it until the caster rod is exposed by about 1 centimeter, then pull it out again.
  • Screw-fixed Type: Use a screwdriver of the corresponding size to loosen the fixing screw, remove the caster, and keep the screw (if it needs to be reused). When operating, keep the tool perpendicular to the contact surface to avoid slipping and scratching the chair's surface.

3. Lubricate and Install the New Casters

  1. Lubrication Treatment: Spray a small amount of WD-40 lubricant into the caster socket on the chair base, or apply a pea-sized amount of petroleum jelly to reduce the friction when installing the new casters.
  2. Alignment Installation: Align the caster rod of the new caster with the socket hole on the base, gently push it with your hand until initial contact is made, and then use a rubber mallet to tap the top of the caster rod (avoid tapping the bottom of the caster to prevent plastic deformation or bearing displacement) until it is fully inserted and there is no wobbling.

4. Testing and Further Inspection

  1. Rolling Test: Place the chair upside down and manually push the casters to observe whether they roll smoothly. If the chair is still tilted, check whether the seat plate is deformed or if the base connection is loose.
  2. Component Replacement: If the caster rubber sleeve is damaged (such as cracking or peeling) or the bearing is seized or makes abnormal noises, replace the corresponding component separately. Be sure to choose products with the same model and size as the original accessories. For example, the load-bearing capacity should match the chair's usage scenario (such as choosing casters with a load-bearing capacity of โ‰ฅ100kg for office chairs).

5. Handling Other Common Issues

  • Caster Seizure: After removing the caster, check whether the internal ball bearings are rusty or damaged. Individual faulty balls can be removed with tweezers and the track cleaned. However, if multiple ball bearings are damaged, it is recommended to replace the entire caster directly.
  • Caster Aging: Rubber casters may harden and crack after long-term use. In this case, replace them with brand-new casters. Prioritize high-quality accessories made of nylon or polyurethane, which have better wear resistance and noise reduction effects.

Precautions: Perform the repair on a stable ground to avoid the chair tipping over. Keep children away from rotating casters and tools. If the caster is severely stuck or the chair has a complex structure (such as a faulty pneumatic rod), it is recommended to contact the manufacturer or a professional repair person for handling.
