Disassembly of Caster Office Chairs

Admin October 10, 2026

The method for disassembling a caster office chair mainly depends on the type of casters, commonly snap-ring and threaded types, with specific steps as follows:

Disassembly of Snap-Ring Casters

  1. Flip the Chair: Lay the office chair down or flip it over so that the back faces up, ensuring that the chair legs are pointing upwards and stable to prevent the chair from sliding or tipping over.
  2. Remove the Casters:
    • Manual Operation: Grasp the wheel with your hand, press it gently downwards while pulling it outward, utilizing the elastic deformation of the snap ring to release it from the metal sleeve of the chair leg. If the snap ring is tight, try gently shaking the wheel from side to side to assist in separation.
    • Tool Assistance: If manual operation is difficult, insert the tip of a flat-head screwdriver or an old key into the gap on the side of the wheel, gently press against the inner side of the snap ring, and pry it outward to loosen it. Control the force during operation to avoid scratching the chair leg or the wheel.

Disassembly of Threaded Casters

  1. Flip the Chair: Similarly, lay the chair down or flip it over to ensure the operating surface faces up.
  2. Remove the Casters:
    • Regular Disassembly: Simply rotate the wheel counterclockwise to unscrew it from the threaded hole in the base of the chair leg. If the wheel fits loosely with the thread, it can be done manually; if it is tight, wear gloves to increase friction.
    • Rust Treatment: If the caster is stuck due to rust, first spray a small amount of lubricant (such as WD-40) into the joint between the wheel and the chair leg, and wait for 5-10 minutes for it to penetrate. Then, use needle-nose pliers to grip the base of the wheel axle, gently shake it from side to side, and try to pull it outward; or align the opening of large scissors or needle-nose pliers with the joint, gently pry it up and down while rotating the wheel counterclockwise to gradually separate it.

Precautions

  1. Safety Precautions:
    • Never Disassemble the Gas Cylinder: The gas cylinder is filled with high-pressure nitrogen gas. Hammering, prying, or heating it may cause gas leakage or even an explosion of the cylinder, leading to danger.
    • Operating Environment: Choose a flat, open ground, clear items from the chair, and stay away from fire sources and sharp objects to avoid accidents during operation.
    • Fault Handling: If the gas cylinder of the chair has problems such as failure to lift or lower, air leakage, or abnormal noise, immediately stop operation and contact a professional for inspection and repair.
  2. Tool Preparation:
    • For snap-ring casters, prepare a flat-head screwdriver or needle-nose pliers to assist in prying. For threaded casters with rust, lubricant and needle-nose pliers are required.
    • Wear gloves during operation to prevent scratches, and prepare a cloth to clean dust and lubricant residue.
