Cardboard Office Chair

Admin October 08, 2026

Cardboard can be used to make office chairs, but it requires creative design and structural optimization, and has certain limitations in terms of practicality such as load-bearing capacity and comfort, making it more suitable for temporary use or as a conceptual design display.

From the perspective of manufacturing feasibility, cardboard has a certain degree of plasticity and can be used to construct a basic structure through cutting, folding, and splicing. For example, circular or square cardboard can be cut out as the base of the seat cushion, and fan-shaped cardboard can be spliced to form the backrest frame. The structural strength can then be enhanced by multiple layers of stacking or filling with hard cardboard strips inside. In some creative cases, tissue paper is folded and glued to the surface of the cardboard, and patterned fabric is wrapped around it to enhance aesthetics. This combination method can theoretically also be applied to the preliminary modeling of office chairs.

However, to meet the actual usage requirements of office chairs, two major issues need to be addressed. The first is load-bearing capacity. Ordinary cardboard has limited thickness in a single layer and is prone to deformation or even breakage under long-term human weight. To increase the load-bearing limit, it is necessary to increase the number of cardboard layers (such as using 5-7 layers of corrugated cardboard stacked together), design triangular support structures (using the stability of triangles to disperse pressure), or embed wooden/metal brackets (adding auxiliary support at key stress points such as chair legs and the edges of the seat cushion) to ensure stable load-bearing of 50-100kg.

The second is comfort optimization. The surface of cardboard is relatively hard, and direct use can easily lead to fatigue from prolonged sitting. Soft materials such as sponge or foam can be filled in the seat cushion and backrest, or breathable fabrics (such as cotton and linen) can be covered to increase softness. At the same time, referring to ergonomic design, the front end of the seat cushion can be slightly tilted downward (about 5ยฐ-10ยฐ), and the backrest can be tilted at 100ยฐ-110ยฐ to reduce pressure on the waist. If higher functionality is pursued, non-slip pads (such as rubber patches) can also be added to the bottom of the chair legs, or a foldable structure can be designed for easy storage.

It should be noted that cardboard office chairs are more suitable for short-term, low-frequency usage scenarios (such as temporary meetings and creative events). If long-term use is required, it is recommended to choose professional office chairs or carry out more complex engineering modifications to the cardboard structure (such as using high-strength industrial cardboard and adding metal connectors).
