Transforming Broken Office Chairs into Treasures

Admin October 10, 2026

Broken office chairs can be creatively upcycled into useful items in various ways. Here are the specific transformation methods:

1. Making Cement Tables and Chairs by Combining with Old Plastic Baskets This method is suitable for discarded office chairs with metal frames and requires the use of old plastic baskets. First, cut the seat, remove the unnecessary lower legs, and keep the backrest. Select two intact plastic baskets of the same size, place the cut backrest about 5 centimeters below the side of the basket body, and secure it by driving in three screws to form a stable support structure. Then, build a barrier around the edge of the basket body with bricks, fill it with dry river sand, and compact it firmly. After reserving a height of 3 centimeters at the top, lay cement mortar and embed a wire mesh to enhance the structural strength. Let it dry and solidify naturally. For the top decoration, you can use circular iron sheets to make plant mats. Leave an opening, place stones, and pour cement to create a fancy shape. For the central area, you can use a discarded plastic bucket with the base removed, fill it with broken bricks and tiles, and then fill it with cement slurry. Finally, clean the dry river sand on the surface, remove the plastic bucket, and paint it for decoration.

2. DIY Transformation of Rusty Office Chairs For office chairs made of metal and with rusty surfaces, you can restore their aesthetics by removing the rust and applying paint. First, repeatedly scrub the rusty parts with a steel wire ball to make the metal surface smooth. Lay paper below the operation area to prevent paint drips from polluting the ground. Pour water-based paint into containers such as takeout boxes, dip a brush into an appropriate amount of paint, and follow the principle of 'thin coating, complete drying, multiple applications' for painting. After each dipping, scrape off the excess paint at the edge of the container to avoid dripping. A single chair requires about 500 grams of water-based paint (a 2-centimeter thickness at the bottom of the takeout box), and one bottle of paint can transform 3 - 4 chairs. This method is also applicable to the renovation of metal furniture such as iron tables, old-fashioned chairs, and stools.

3. Transforming Waste Plastic Office Chairs into Garden Swings Plastic office chairs can be transformed into garden swings through structural modifications. First, use a saw to cut off the four chair legs evenly, keeping the seat and armrests. Drill holes at the four key load-bearing points on the armrests and the bottom of the seat (such as the connection points between the seat surface and the armrests) with an electric drill, ensuring that the hole diameter matches the diameter of the rope used. Finally, thread sturdy nylon or hemp ropes through the holes, adjust their lengths, and fix them to tree branches or supports. Place soft cushions to complete the transformation. After the transformation, regularly check the wear of the ropes to ensure safety during use.
