Bomb Office Chair

Admin October 09, 2026

A 'bomb office chair' refers to an office chair that poses serious safety risks such as explosion, primarily due to substandard office swivel chairs, with explosions often linked to poor-quality gas springs.

According to the national supervision and random inspection results of office chairs released by the State Administration for Market Regulation, substandard office chairs carry explosion risks, with swivel chairs accounting for the vast majority of non-compliant products. Out of 21 batches of non-compliant office chairs, 17 were swivel chairs.

Pneumatic swivel chairs use gas springs (gas cylinders) filled with inert gas to adjust seat height through pressure differentials. However, if the quality of the gas cylinder is subpar, it may lead to an explosion. Specifically, gas cylinders with overly thin walls lack sufficient structural strength to withstand normal pressure changes during use; impure inert gas or the substitution of compressed air for inert gas can alter the chemical and physical environment inside the cylinder, affecting its stability; excessive heat generated by repeated seat adjustments can also cause abnormal pressure increases inside the cylinder. All these conditions can potentially result in gas cylinder explosions. For example, the staff chairs produced by Dongguan Linsheng Industrial Co., Ltd. failed the high and low-temperature resistance tests, posing explosion risks under extreme conditions.

To prevent explosions in office swivel chairs, an effective protective measure is to install a blast-resistant steel plate with a thickness of no less than 2 millimeters between the gas cylinder and the swivel chair seat cushion. However, some companies produce office chairs without such blast-resistant steel plates, resulting in non-compliance in safety tests. Relevant products from companies such as Shanghai Xingaofan Furniture Manufacturing Co., Ltd., Dongguan Xieji Furniture Co., Ltd., Foshan Zhongge Furniture Industrial Co., Ltd., and Shunde Shuaifu Furniture Co., Ltd. in Foshan fall into this category. When purchasing office chairs, consumers should check whether the products have passed relevant safety tests and whether they are equipped with safety devices such as blast-resistant steel plates to ensure their own safety.
