Blue Office Chair Explosion
The explosion of a blue office chair is a sudden explosive phenomenon caused by component defects in pneumatic lift swivel chairs, which mostly occurs in low-quality pneumatic rod products and has caused serious consequences.

Typical cases of pneumatic lift swivel chair explosions include: On February 25, 2025, a netizen posted that the light-blue pneumatic lift swivel chair in their office suddenly exploded. The seat cushion was blown through, the internal sponge was exposed, debris was scattered all over the floor, and it even pierced the ceiling and broke the light tube. Earlier, on January 14, 2009, a 14-year-old boy in Jiaozhou, Shandong, was adjusting a pneumatic chair when it exploded. The top rod pierced into his body from the buttocks, and he eventually died from excessive blood loss. These incidents show that the explosion of pneumatic lift swivel chairs is not an isolated case and can cause serious personal injuries.
The core causes of the explosion are directly related to component defects:
- Excessively thin tube wall of the pneumatic rod: To reduce costs, low-quality pneumatic rods may use steel with an insufficient tube wall thickness. This can cause the internal high-pressure gas (usually nitrogen) to break through the tube wall during frequent use or temperature changes, triggering an explosion.
- Insufficient purity or substitution of inert gas: Regular pneumatic rods should be filled with high-purity nitrogen to suppress combustion. However, low-quality products may be mixed with air (containing oxygen) or directly use compressed air. After oxygen comes into contact with flammable substances such as the lubricating oil and sponge inside the chair, it may cause combustion or even an explosion under high temperatures or friction.
- Frequent lifting and lowering leading to a sudden temperature rise: Pneumatic rods adjust the height through piston movement. If users frequently lift and lower the chair or maintain a certain posture for a long time, the heat generated by the friction between the piston and the tube wall may cause the internal gas temperature to rise sharply, and the pressure may exceed the limit that the tube wall can bear.
Preventive measures should focus on product quality and usage specifications:
- When purchasing, choose products that have passed national safety certifications (such as GB/T 10357.4-2013) and avoid low-priced and low-quality pneumatic rods.
- Avoid frequently adjusting the chair height to reduce friction and temperature fluctuations inside the pneumatic rod.
- Regularly check the appearance of the pneumatic rod. If you find tube wall dents, air leaks, or abnormal noises, stop using it immediately and replace it.
