Turning a Black Office Chair White

Admin October 19, 2026

A black office chair can be turned white through methods such as repainting, using refinishing stickers, making custom soft furnishings, or covering it with a white cover.

Repainting

  1. Thoroughly sand the surface: Start with 360-grit sandpaper for rough sanding to remove large chunks of old paint. Then, use 600- or 800-grit sandpaper for fine sanding until the surface has a uniform matte finish. Apply even pressure while sanding to avoid excessive local wear. After sanding, use a dry cloth or vacuum cleaner to remove all dust.
  2. Clean the surface: Wipe the surface with a damp cloth to remove dust and dirt, ensuring a clean surface.
  3. Use bleach (optional): Mix bleach with water and apply it to the surface with a brush. After waiting 20 - 30 minutes, rinse it off with clean water to reduce the color of the black paint.
  4. Apply primer: When changing from a dark color to a light color, it is essential to use a high-coverage special primer to seal the original base color, prevent bleed-through or uneven coloring, and improve the adhesion and uniformity of the topcoat.
  5. Choose the right paint: Select wood paint instead of wall latex paint. Wood paint has stronger abrasion resistance, tensile resistance, and adhesion, making it more suitable for furniture surfaces and having a longer service life.
  6. Apply paint in thin coats multiple times: When spraying or brushing, follow the principle of applying thin coats multiple times. Usually, 2 to 3 coats of topcoat are required. The first coat serves as a base to fill in imperfections, the second coat makes the paint film thickness and color full, and for the ultimate effect, a third coat can be applied for touch-ups. Allow sufficient drying time between each coat. If using white spray paint, at least 3 coats are required.
  7. Allow for full drying and final inspection: The work environment should be well-ventilated and dry, avoiding work in humid weather. After the last coat of paint is completely dry, inspect the surface in well-lit conditions for any missed spots, bleed-through, or runs, and perform local touch-up spraying or sanding and repair as needed.

Other Methods

  • Use refinishing stickers: This is the most convenient and quick method. Simply apply white refinishing stickers directly to the surface of the office chair.
  • Make custom soft furnishings: This is the most flexible method. You can make white soft furnishings according to your personal preferences and decorate them on the office chair.
  • Cover with a white cover: Put a white cover on the black office chair. This is simple and easy to do, and the cover can be changed at any time.
