BFM Office Chair Testing

Admin October 10, 2026

BFM office chair testing refers to the comprehensive performance tests conducted on office chairs in accordance with BIFMA standards, primarily based on standards such as ANSI BIFMA X 5.1. The testing covers two core areas: strength and durability, and stability.

Strength and Durability Testing

  • Base Strength Testing: This includes static pressure testing and impact testing. Static pressure testing applies a certain number of cyclic loads at the center of the seat surface to check for fractures, cracks, or functional deformations in the base structure. Impact testing involves using a standard impact body to free-fall from a specified height onto the front edge and center area of the seat. After testing, the chair structure must remain undamaged and fully functional.
  • Backrest Strength Testing: This is divided into static load testing and durability testing. Static load testing applies a backward static force at the center of the upper edge of the backrest for a specified duration. After testing, the backrest support structure must not fracture or detach, and the repositioning function must remain normal. Durability testing simulates the user's reclining motion using equipment, applying a specified number of cyclic loads to the backrest. After testing, the backrest adjustment mechanism must function normally, and the structure must not fail.
  • Armrest Strength Testing: There are two types: vertical downward static load testing and lateral static load testing. Vertical downward static load testing applies a vertical downward static force at a specified position on the front end of the armrest. After testing, the armrest and its fixing device must not loosen, fracture, or exhibit professional deformation. Lateral static load testing applies a horizontal lateral static force at a specified position on the outer side of the armrest. After testing, the armrest structure must not be damaged, and the fixing points must not loosen.
  • Caster and Five-Star Base Durability Testing: Caster reciprocating wear testing involves loading the chair with weights and performing a specified number of reciprocating pushing cycles on a test platform to simulate daily movement wear. After testing, the caster rolling function must remain normal, with no detachment or structural damage. Five-star base static pressure testing applies a vertical downward static force sequentially to the end of each leg. After testing, the five-star base must not have cracks or fractures. Five-star base drop impact testing involves raising the chair loaded with weights to a certain height and allowing it to free-fall. After testing, the five-star base structure must remain intact, with no safety-compromising damage.

Stability Testing

  • Forward Stability: Place the chair on a horizontal test platform, load the seat with the specified weight, and apply a horizontal forward force at the top of the backrest. During testing, the chair must not tip forward.
  • Lateral Stability: Similarly, place the chair on a horizontal test platform, load the seat with the specified weight, and apply a horizontal lateral force at the top edge of the backrest. During testing, the chair must not tip laterally.
  • Backward Stability: Lock the chair casters (if applicable) or place them on a non-slip surface, and apply a horizontal backward force at the top of the backrest. The rear legs of the chair must not lift more than the standard limit.
