Beijing Office Chair Explosion

Admin October 14, 2026

There have been no independently reported incidents of office chair explosions in Beijing, but the risk of explosions in pneumatic lift-type swivel chairs is widespread across the country, and the principles and hazards involved warrant serious attention.

The core cause of pneumatic chair explosions lies in quality defects in the pneumatic rods. Qualified pneumatic rods should be filled with high-purity (โ‰ฅ90%) inert nitrogen gas, but inferior products often use high-pressure air to reduce costs. When oxygen in the air heats up due to frequent lifting and friction, it may react violently with the lubricant inside the cylinder, causing a sudden increase in internal pressure. Additionally, defects such as overly thin walls, insufficient material strength, or poor sealing and welding cracks in the pneumatic rods can further reduce structural stability, making them prone to rupture under long-term pressure.

The destructive power of explosions far exceeds everyday perceptions. Simulation experiments conducted by Beihang University show that the impact force from an explosion can penetrate at least six layers of boards, causing fatal penetrating injuries. In real-world cases, a 14-year-old boy in Jiaozhou, Shandong, was killed in 2009 when a rod pierced his buttocks, and in 2010, a woman surnamed Liu in Xiamen, Fujian, had more than a dozen chair fragments removed from her intestines, both confirming the lethal risks. Data from the State Administration for Market Regulation indicates a relatively high failure rate in office chairs, with defects in pneumatic rod performance being one of the main issues.

Preventive measures must focus on both purchasing and usage.

  1. Prioritize products from reputable channels: It is recommended to purchase branded swivel chairs priced above 200 yuan to avoid low-quality, inexpensive products.
  2. Check the performance of the pneumatic rod: Lifting and lowering should be smooth without stuttering, abnormal noises, or wobbling.
  3. Confirm the presence of explosion-proof structures: A explosion-proof steel plate with a thickness of at least 2 millimeters should be installed between the seat cushion and the pneumatic rod to effectively buffer the impact of an explosion.
  4. Avoid improper use: Do not frequently rotate or violently adjust the seat to prevent localized overheating or mechanical damage.

Pneumatic chair explosions, while not frequent, can have severe consequences when they occur. By making informed purchases and using chairs properly, the risks can be significantly reduced, ensuring office safety.
