Be Cautious About Office Chairs

Admin October 08, 2026

Be cautious as office chairs may be substandard. A spot check by the State Administration for Market Regulation revealed anไธๅˆๆ ผๅ‘็Žฐ็އ (non-compliance rate) of 14.9%, involving issues such as stability, caster wear, and formaldehyde emissions, which may pose personal injury risks to consumers.

1. Risks of Substandard Stability
Stability is a core indicator for assessing the quality of office chairs. In this spot check, seven batches of products were deemed non-compliant due to substandard stability, involving seven enterprises including Foshan Shouyu Furniture Co., Ltd. and Huizhou Branch of Shenzhen Jialewei Dun Furniture Co., Ltd. Such products are prone to tipping over when leaning forward, backward, or sitting sideways, potentially causing serious injuries such as falls, fractures, or head impacts, especially in office settings where sitting postures are frequently adjusted.

2. Quality Issues with Key Components
The five-star base of swivel office chairs, as a load-bearing component, may suddenly break during use if there are defects in material or workmanship, causing the user to fall. Additionally, five batches failed the caster wear test. Such issues can shorten the lifespan of office chairs and may cause stuttering, abnormal noises during wear, or even tripping accidents due to wheel detachment.

3. Health and Safety Hazards
Excessive formaldehyde emissions are another prominent issue, with four batches failing this test. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen, and long-term exposure may cause respiratory diseases, skin allergies, and even increase the risk of cancer. As office chairs are frequently contacted furniture, their formaldehyde emissions directly affect indoor air quality, posing a potential threat to the health of office workers.

4. Purchase and Usage Recommendations
Consumers should prioritize products that have passed national mandatory certifications (such as CCC certification) and check test reports to confirm compliance with key indicators such as stability and formaldehyde levels. Avoid vigorous shaking or overloading during use, and regularly inspect components such as the five-star base and casters for looseness or damage. If abnormal noises, wobbling, or pungent odors are detected, stop using the chair immediately and contact after-sales service. Enterprises should strengthen raw material testing and finished product inspection before leaving the factory to avoid safety liability accidents caused by quality issues.
