Bad Office Chair Modification

Admin October 09, 2026

There are various ways to modify a bad office chair, and you can choose an appropriate plan based on your needs and materials. Here are some common modification methods:

1. Transform a discarded chair into a cement seat If the chair is severely damaged and not worth repairing, you can turn it into a cement seat. First, use an angle grinder to cut off the legs of the chair, leaving only the seat part. Place the seat on the surface of a cement component that has not yet hardened, and press it firmly to embed it into the mortar, ensuring full contact between the seat and the cement. Then, pour cement slurry into the gaps between the seat and the cement component to fill the gaps and enhance stability. After the cement has completely hardened, spray black paint on the entire chair to protect the cement surface and improve its aesthetics. This method is suitable for discarded metal or plastic chairs, and the modified cement seats can be used as outdoor or industrial-style decorations.

2. Upgrade a front passenger seat to an office chair If you have a front passenger seat from a car, you can modify it into an office chair. First, customize a steel plate with 16 pre-drilled holes, of which 10 are for fixing the seat and 6 are for installing armrests (if armrests are not needed, only 10 holes can be reserved). Connect the steel plate to the bottom of the seat with screws and tighten them with nuts to ensure stability. Then, install casters at the bottom of the steel plate to make the chair mobile. When connecting the power, align the battery with the connector on the seat to enable the electric adjustment function of the seat. This method is suitable for office scenarios that require electric adjustment functions, but you need to pay attention to the matching of the seat size with the office environment.

3. Transform a broken swivel chair into an ergonomic chair If the chassis of the swivel chair is in good condition but the backrest, seat cushion, and other parts are damaged, you can transform it into an ergonomic chair. First, measure the distance between the two holes on the chassis of the swivel chair and the size of the holes to customize appropriate ergonomic chair accessories, including a backrest, seat cushion, headrest, armrests, etc. After receiving the accessories, assemble them with tools: first install the main structure of the chair, then fix the seat cushion part, and finally install the headrest. For example, someone transformed a swivel chair that had been used at home for more than 10 years, with a damaged backrest but an intact chassis, by spending 120 yuan on customized accessories and completing the transformation in less than half an hour. This method is cost-effective and can significantly improve the comfort and support of the chair.
