Backrest Office Chair Heightening

Admin October 13, 2026

There are multiple ways to heighten the backrest of an office chair. Here are specific solutions:

I. Accessory Installation

  1. Install lumbar support and headrest: After measuring the width of the chair back, choose a detachable lumbar support and an adjustable headrest. Opt for models with punch-free buckles or strap fastenings, and directly fix them above the chair back to increase back support height.
  2. Use heightening cushions or footrests: Place a non-slip heightening cushion on the chair seat, or pair a stable footrest under the chair to indirectly increase the relative height of the backrest by elevating the sitting posture.
  3. Install detachable foot pads: Purchase silicone chair leg covers with a diameter of 4cm online, and slip them over the original chair legs to raise them by about 2cm. For higher support, choose metal heightening feet with screws, which require a wrench for installation and stability testing.

II. Structural Modification

  1. Replace with heightening chair legs: Measure the interface size of the original chair legs, purchase matching heightening accessories, and use a wrench to remove the old chair legs before installing the new parts. After installation, shake the chair to test its load-bearing stability.
  2. Replace with a lifting mechanism: Skilled technicians can remove the original fixed feet and replace them with a lifting gas rod from a computer chair. Note that the load-bearing capacity of plastic chairs generally does not exceed 80kg, and measure the diameter of the gas rod base in advance to ensure compatibility.
  3. Add buffer layers: Stack two discarded yoga mats to the size of your palm and adhere them to the underside of the chair seat with strong double-sided tape. Alternatively, wrap thick books in cloth and tie them to the bottom of the chair seat, ensuring left-right balance to prevent tilting.

III. Product Purchase

  1. Buy a backrest heightening cushion: Choose a finished heightening cushion made of memory foam or other materials that can conform to the body's curves and provide comfortable support. Ensure the size fits the seat.
  2. Make a heightening device yourself: After measuring the dimensions of the chair back, cut a piece of wood, add soft materials like sponge to enhance comfort, and fix it to the backrest with straps or clips, ensuring it is securely fastened.

Precautions: Before modification, evaluate the material and load-bearing capacity of the chair to avoid safety hazards caused by structural changes. Prioritize reversible solutions (such as accessory installation) for easy subsequent adjustments or restoration to the original state.
