Are Office Chairs Safe?

Admin October 16, 2026

There are differences in the safety of office chairs, with some non-compliant products posing serious safety hazards, while products that meet safety standards are relatively safer.

I. Safety Hazards of Non-compliant Office Chairs

  1. Explosion Risk: The gas spring is the core component of an office swivel chair. If a low-quality gas spring is used (such as one with an overly thin tube wall, impure inert gas, or compressed air used as a substitute), it may explode under frequent lifting and lowering or in high-temperature environments. For example, in 2017, an office chair belonging to a colleague of a netizen in Anhui exploded, causing the chair base to separate from the seat; in 2009, a 14-year-old boy in Jiaozhou, Shandong, was severely injured and ultimately died due to an explosion of a swivel chair. In addition, office chairs without explosion-proof steel plates (with a thickness of at least 2 millimeters) may puncture the seat and cause harm to the human body during an explosion. Some office chairs produced by enterprises have been found to be non-compliant due to the lack of explosion-proof steel plates.
  2. Structural Breakage Risk: The five-star base of an office chair (the component that bears the weight of the human body) may break during daily use if the tube wall is too thin or the strength is insufficient, causing the user to fall and get injured. According to the sampling inspection results of the State Administration for Market Regulation, among 90 batches of products from 90 enterprises in 11 provinces and cities, 21 batches were non-compliant, with a non-compliance rate of 23.3%. The main problems included base breakage and caster detachment.
  3. Excessive Harmful Substances: Some office chairs have problems with excessive formaldehyde levels. Long-term exposure may pose health hazards to the human body, such as irritating the respiratory tract and triggering allergic reactions.

II. Safety Guarantees of Compliant Office Chairs
Products that meet safety standards (such as office chairs that have passed the Leite Class IV gas rod certification and have a five-year after-sales guarantee) have undergone rigorous testing in terms of strength and durability and are relatively safer. These products usually use high-quality gas springs, thickened explosion-proof steel plates, high-strength five-star bases, and other components, and have passed strict quality inspections, effectively reducing the risks of explosion and breakage.

III. Purchase Recommendations
To ensure the safety of office chairs, it is recommended to choose products that have passed national safety certifications and have comprehensive after-sales guarantees, and avoid purchasing office chairs with excessively low prices and unknown sources.
