Making Office Chairs with Angle Steel

Admin October 10, 2026

Angle steel can be used to make office chairs, and key points such as material selection, design planning, and connection methods need to be considered during the making process.

Material Preparation and Selection: Angle steel specifications are expressed as 'side length ร— side length ร— thickness'. For making office chairs, it is necessary to choose specifications with strong load-bearing capacity. Angle steel with specifications of 40ร—40ร—4mm or 50ร—50ร—5mm has sufficient strength and is suitable for use as chair legs and main frames. If making lightweight stools, the 30ร—30ร—3mm specification can also be considered. In terms of material, Q235 ordinary carbon steel is a common choice that meets daily use requirements. Auxiliary materials include connectors (bolts, nuts, washers), surface treatment materials (anti-rust primer, topcoat, sandpaper), cushion materials (sponge, fabric, straps), and tools (angle grinder, electric drill, wrench, tape measure, marking pen). Safety protective gear (gloves, goggles, masks) is essential.

Design Planning and Drawing Reference: It should conform to ergonomic dimensions: the seat height of an adult chair is about 45 centimeters, the depth is 40-45 centimeters, the backrest height is 40-50 centimeters, and the recline angle is 100-105 degrees to enhance comfort. The design can start with a simple square stool and gradually progress to a dining chair with a backrest or an industrial-style desk chair. Utilize the L-shape characteristic of angle steel to enhance connection stability. Refer to existing steel structure furniture drawings and mark the cutting lengths on sketches or computer software to avoid dimensional errors.

Cutting and Connection Operations: Before cutting, use a tape measure and marking pen for precise positioning. When using an angle grinder for cutting, fix the workpiece and wear goggles and gloves. After cutting, polish the burrs. Screw connection (bolt connection) is the first choice for DIY. It does not require welding equipment and can be disassembled and adjusted. The operation steps are to align the angle steel sections, drill holes, insert bolts, and tighten the nuts to ensure a firm connection.

Other Reference Cases: The double-seat desk and chair with an angle steel frame structure achieve durability and recyclability by welding the frame and fixing the panels with bolts. In the DIY of low-cost rental housing furniture, the angle steel table, through horizontal support and anti-shaking reinforcement design (such as using 1.2-meter and 1.5-meter angle steel to form the outer frame and internal vertical supports to enhance the load-bearing capacity), can provide load-bearing and stability references for the making of office chairs.
