Ancient Office Chair

Ancient office chairs originated in ancient Egypt and were later developed through ancient Greece and ancient Rome. Nowadays, retro-style office chairs are available for sale.

Origin and Development

• Ancient Egypt: True chairs first appeared in ancient Egypt around four thousand years ago. The Egyptians invented chairs with distinct backrests, four separate legs, and even armrests. However, in Egyptian society at that time, chairs were symbols of "power" and not everyday items for ordinary people; only those of higher status could use them.
• Ancient Greece: The ancient Greeks invented the "Klismos chair," which featured smooth lines and a slightly reclined backrest, making it quite comfortable to sit on. Its design was so classic that it was still being replicated more than two thousand years later, reflecting the remarkable wisdom and aesthetic level of the ancient Greeks in furniture design and having a profound impact on the development of chairs in later generations.
• Ancient Rome: The ancient Romans invented the "folding chair," which was convenient for military officers to issue orders during marches, demonstrating strong practicality. Moreover, chairs among the Romans began to show a trend of being accessible to everyone. At least in bathhouses and theaters, ordinary citizens could sit on stone-built seats, reflecting the gradual democratization of chair use in ancient Roman society.
