American Standard Office Chairs

Admin October 09, 2026

American standard office chairs primarily involve two testing standards: ANSI/BIFMA X5.1-2017 and ANSI/BIFMA X5.11-2015.

ANSI/BIFMA X5.1-2017 is a mandatory national performance standard for office chairs developed by the Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association (BIFMA) and recognized by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). This standard underwent a core upgrade in 2017, increasing the base load capacity to 275 pounds, adding an overall structural durability test, and eliminating the base static test. It applies to various types of office chairs, including commercial swivel chairs, staff chairs, executive chairs, visitor chairs with writing tablets, and high-stool office benches. The testing purposes are diverse, including serving as an entry threshold for North American supermarkets and engineering tenders, verifying the structural strength, anti-tipping capability, and 10-year commercial durability of office chairs to avoid safety accidents such as breakage and tipping. Additionally, it serves as compliance evidence for exporting to the United States in tenders and customer factory inspections. The testing items under this standard cover stability, static strength, seat impact, durability cycling, and more, with the judgment criteria being no breakage, no functional failure, and no jamming of adjustment mechanisms.

ANSI/BIFMA X5.11-2015, on the other hand, is a testing standard designed for office chairs used by large-bodied individuals. Based on a user weight of 400 pounds, it aims to evaluate the performance of such office chairs in terms of safety, durability, and structural strength. This standard applies to various types of seating used by large-bodied individuals in office environments, including manager chairs, administrative chairs, secretary chairs, VIP chairs, and stacking chairs.

Take the Embody ergonomic office chair launched by Herman Miller as an example. Although it does not directly mention passing American standard tests, its development process involved laboratory testing conducted in collaboration with over 30 medical experts, verifying the chair's effects on improving metabolism and sitting posture, and it has won multiple awards. This reflects its design philosophy that aligns with ergonomic principles and safety durability, which is consistent with the purposes of American standard tests.
