American Office Chair Adjustment

Admin October 19, 2026

The adjustment of American office chairs mainly includes backrest recline and height adjustment, with specific operations as follows:

Backrest Recline Adjustment

There are various ways to adjust the backrest recline of American office chairs, and the appropriate method should be selected based on the chair type:

  1. Lever Adjustment System: Common in mid-range and high-end models. The adjustment lever is usually located on the right or left side beneath the seat, and some chairs may require releasing the recline lock first. When operating, adjust your body weight to lean backward while adjusting the lever to achieve a comfortable backrest angle, and finally lock the position (if there is a locking function). This method is suitable for users who need precise control over the recline angle.
  2. Knob Adjustment System: Often used in ergonomic chairs. The knob is generally located near the center of the lower part of the seat, close to the support column. Turning the knob clockwise increases the recline resistance, while turning it counterclockwise decreases the resistance. Some chairs may be equipped with a separate knob to adjust the recline angle, and the specific operation should be confirmed by referring to the product manual.
  3. Pneumatic Adjustment System: Commonly used in modern chairs, where the pneumatic lever is usually integrated with the height adjustment lever. Smooth backrest recline can be achieved by pushing the lever in different directions (such as forward or backward), suitable for users who pursue convenient operation.

Height Adjustment

Height adjustment should be combined with the seat control device and ergonomic principles:

  1. Locate the Control Device: When sitting in the chair, try to pull up or turn the lever/knob beneath the seat. If you are unsure, read the manual or test each one (observe whether the seat rises or falls after pulling up).
  2. Adjust the Seat Height: Move a few centimeters at a time to avoid excessive adjustments. For pneumatic models, fine-tuning can be achieved by repeatedly pushing the lever up and down (pumping); some models require pulling the lever up to raise the seat and pressing it down to lower the height. After adjustment, move the lever back to its original position to secure it.
  3. Adjust with Standing Posture: If adjusting the sitting posture is difficult, stand in front of the chair so that the front end of the chair is just below your knees. When sitting down, you should be able to keep your feet flat on the ground for comfort.
  4. Match the Height to the Task: When working on a computer, keep your eyes level with the monitor; when working at a desk, the height of your elbows should be level with the desk; when sitting for long periods, adjust the height so that your feet naturally touch the ground to reduce leg pressure.
  5. Optimize Safety and Comfort: If the chair is equipped with armrests, adjust their height or remove them; change your sitting posture every 15-30 minutes; if the chair is too high, use a footrest to support your feet and avoid hanging them in the air.

By reasonably adjusting the backrest recline and height, the comfort and health support of American office chairs can be significantly improved. It is recommended to adjust flexibly according to your body type and usage scenario.
