Amazon Office Chair Requirements

Admin October 10, 2026

Office chairs on Amazon US must meet requirements in four aspects: test reports, structural safety, flame-retardant safety, and laboratory qualifications.

Test Reports: A test report issued by an ISO 17025-accredited laboratory is required, with testing standards being ANSI/BIFMA X5.1 and CA TB117-2013 (16 CFR 1640). This is the basic threshold for products to enter Amazon US, ensuring that they meet the fundamental safety and quality requirements of the US market.

Structural Safety: Based on the ANSI/BIFMA X5.1 - 2017 standard, which is the core safety standard for general office chairs in the US and also the core basis for Amazon's review. The report must cover a full set of mechanical testing items, including backrest static strength testing, rotation durability testing, tilt mechanism fatigue testing, seat durability testing, stability testing, armrest static strength testing, backrest fatigue testing, caster/seat durability testing, and overall structural durability cycle testing, etc. As the highest-risk component of an office chair, in addition to whole-chair testing, it is recommended to provide an additionalไธ“้กน (special) test report for the gas spring that complies with the BIFMA X5.4 standard to further ensure its safety.

Flame-Retardant Safety: According to the 16 CFR Part 1640 standard, the testing method refers to the smoldering requirements of California TB 117 - 2013. For the fabric, foam, and other filling materials of upholstered office chairs, it verifies the smoldering flame-retardant resistance to avoid the risk of indoor fires. The testing needs to cover four core components: the outer fabric, the intermediate isolation layer, the filling material, and the bottom support material, ensuring that there is no continuous smoldering, the char length meets the standard, and there is no open flame under specific conditions. For office chairs with no upholstery, such as pure steel-frame chairs and mesh chairs without filling, a formal product description can be issued to apply for an exemption from flame-retardant testing.

Laboratory Qualification Requirements: The laboratory issuing the report must have ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation, which is accepted globally by the platform. Priority should be given to laboratories officially recognized by the CPSC, as they are more in line with the underlying logic of US regulations and have a higher pass rate for appeal reviews. Before submitting an appeal, be sure to check whether the laboratory is on Amazon's blacklist to avoid product unavailability or removal due to laboratory qualification issues.
