Explosion of Air-Pressure Office Chair

Admin October 10, 2026

Explosions of air-pressure adjustable office chairs are often caused by inferior air pressure rods, and the risk can be reduced through standardized purchasing and inspection.

The explosion risk of air-pressure adjustable chairs mainly stems from design flaws or material issues in the air pressure rods. Standard air pressure rods achieve lifting and lowering by filling with inert gases (such as nitrogen) and utilizing pressure differences, while inferior products may use compressed air instead of nitrogen. The oxygen in the air can react with the metal components of the air pressure rod through oxidation, generating heat and accelerating metal aging, leading to a continuous buildup of internal pressure and ultimately causing an explosion. Additionally, factors such as overly thin walls of the air pressure rod, insufficient purity of the inert gas, frequent lifting and lowering causing sudden temperature increases, air leakage from the air pressure rod, poor material of the container wall, or inadequate sealing at the closure can also serve as triggers for explosions.

Typical cases highlight the severity of the hazard:

  • In 2013, Ms. Liu was sitting on a swivel chair preparing to blow-dry her hair when the chair suddenly exploded. A steel rod with a diameter of 3 centimeters penetrated her lower body and entered her uterus. Doctors removed dozens of metal fragments from her abdominal cavity and more than ten sharp debris from her intestines.
  • In 2009, a 14-year-old boy in Jiaozhou, Shandong, died after a top rod pierced his body while adjusting an air-pressure chair.
  • A woman in Xiamen was injured by an exploding adjustable chair, and doctors removed more than ten fragments from her intestines.

Preventive measures must be strictly implemented:

  1. Inspect product labels and appearance: Prioritize products with labels from reputable manufacturers and observe whether the air pressure rod has obvious scratches, deformations, or air leaks. If the chair wobbles unsteadily, it should be replaced immediately.
  2. Choose brands with quality certifications: Look for products certified by SGS or ISO, as these brands are more reliable in terms of material safety and manufacturing processes.
  3. Pay attention to price and materials: It is recommended to purchase products priced above 200 yuan and check whether the air pressure rod lifts and lowers smoothly. Additionally, ensure that a blast-resistant steel plate with a thickness of at least 2 millimeters is installed between the seat cushion and the air pressure rod to cushion the impact of an explosion.

By purchasing chairs in a standardized manner and conducting regular inspections, the risk of explosion in air-pressure adjustable chairs can be effectively avoided, ensuring safety during use.
