Air Cushion Office Chair Explosion
Admin October 10, 2026
The explosion of an air-cushion office chair refers to a sudden explosive phenomenon in pneumatic lift swivel chairs caused by component defects, often occurring in low-quality pneumatic rod products and seriously threatening user safety.

Causes of Explosion
- Quality Issues with Pneumatic Rods: Low-priced products often use pneumatic rods that do not meet quality standards, with manufacturing defects such as poor sealing and insufficient material strength, leading to unstable internal gas pressure. If the wall of the pneumatic rod is too thin, or the purity of the inert gas is insufficient (even replaced by compressed air), the risk of explosion significantly increases.
- Improper Use and Maintenance: If users over-pressurize, use the chair for extended periods leading to aging of the pneumatic rod, or if the chair is subjected to external impacts (such as collisions or heavy pressure), the internal pressure balance of the pneumatic rod may be disrupted, triggering an explosion.
- Lack of Safety Standards: Some manufacturers lack strict safety design and supervision, resulting in products with design flaws (such as the absence of explosion-proof devices), allowing low-quality products to enter the market.
Typical Cases
- Zhoushan, Zhejiang, 2007: A woman had her pants pierced by an exploding air-cushion chair, with hard plastic and sawdust fragments penetrating her body up to 10 centimeters.
- Jiaozhou, Shandong, 2009: A 14-year-old boy was fatally injured when the top rod of a pneumatic chair pierced his body during adjustment.
- Anhui, 2017: An office chair explosion caused damage to a computer case.
- Xiamen Case: A woman experienced an explosion while blowing her hair on the chair, with a deafening sound. Doctors removed numerous fragments from her buttocks and abdomen, and the computer case was blown open.
- Yantai Case: A 68-year-old man was severely injured when a 16-centimeter steel bar ejected from an exploding chair pierced his abdomen, causing damage to his buttocks, legs, and rectum.
Preventive Measures
- Choose Genuine Products: Prioritize brands priced above 200 yuan with clear production qualifications, avoiding low-priced and low-quality products.
- Check Pneumatic Rod Performance: During trial use, ensure smooth lifting and lowering without stuttering or abnormal sounds, and avoid using aged or abnormal pneumatic rods.
- Confirm Explosion-Proof Design: Check whether an explosion-proof steel plate with a thickness of โฅ2 millimeters is installed between the seat cushion and the pneumatic rod. This device can block explosive fragments and reduce the risk of injury.
- Standardize Usage Habits: Avoid frequent height adjustments or prolonged pressurization, regularly check the structural integrity of the chair, and keep it away from fire sources, sharp objects, and violent usage scenarios.
