Adjusting the Backrest of an Office Chair

Admin October 12, 2026

Here are the methods for adjusting the backrest of an office chair:

1. Locate the Adjustment Handle
Most adjustable office chairs are equipped with an adjustment handle on the right side of the seat. Some high-end models, such as the Heibai Diao Ergonomic Chair Structure Master E3pro, may use a wired remote control or a control lever on the right side of the cushion. The handle/lever is the core component for controlling reclining, locking angles, and returning to an upright position, so it's essential to identify its location before use.

2. Unlock the Reclining Function

  • General Method: Pull the right-side handle, lean back slightly with your back, and release the handle to fix the current angle. To return to an upright position, pull the handle again and lean forward slightly with your body; the chair back will automatically rebound.
  • Special Model: For the Heibai Diao Ergonomic Chair Structure Master E3pro, pull the wired remote control backward, lean back to recline, and reset the remote control to the middle position to lock the angle. To return to an upright position, repeat the process of pulling the remote control backward and leaning forward with your body; after the chair back returns to the upright position, reset the remote control to fix it.

3. Adjust the Reclining Tension
Some office chairs are equipped with a cylindrical knob on the base to adjust the backrest's rebound tension:

  • Clockwise Rotation: Increases the backrest's support force, suitable for users with a heavier weight or those who need strong support.
  • Counterclockwise Rotation: Decreases the rebound force, making reclining easier, suitable for users with a lighter weight or those who prefer a softer feel. This function requires repeated adjustments based on personal comfort to avoid excessive tension making reclining difficult or insufficient tension resulting in inadequate support.

4. Lock the Reclining Angle

  • Wired Remote Control/Lever Locking: The Heibai Diao Ergonomic Chair Structure Master E3pro locks the angle by resetting the wired remote control. Some chairs require pulling out the control lever on the right side of the cushion to recline freely and then pushing the lever lightly to lock the angle.
  • Handle Locking: Traditional office chairs usually lock automatically when the handle is pulled and the chair is reclined to the target angle. To return to an upright position, pull the handle again and lean forward with your body.

5. Return to an Upright Position

  • General Method: Pull the handle and lean forward slightly with your body; the chair back will automatically rebound. If the chair is equipped with a control lever, pull it out and apply backward pressure to the backrest; after the chair back is upright, push the lever back to lock it.
  • Special Model: For the Heibai Diao Ergonomic Chair Structure Master E3pro, repeat the process of pulling the wired remote control backward as in the reclining operation and lean forward with your body to return to the upright position.

Precautions:

  • Maintain body balance while adjusting to avoid sudden force causing the chair to slide or tip over.
  • If the chair is equipped with a pneumatic rod, ensure its height adjustment function is locked to prevent the seat from sinking when reclining.
  • Regularly check the tightness of the adjustment components to prevent looseness and potential safety hazards.
