Adjustable Office Chair Wobbling

Admin October 17, 2026

The wobbling of an adjustable office chair may be caused by normal movement of the hydraulic rod or component failure, and troubleshooting should be carried out based on the severity. The specific causes and solutions are as follows:

I. Preliminary Assessment of the Wobbling Nature
If the wobbling only occurs slightly during the lifting process, it may be a normal phenomenon caused by the high-pressure nitrogen inside the hydraulic rod adjusting the pressure, and usually no treatment is required. If the wobbling is severe or persistent, there may be safety hazards, and further investigation is needed.

II. Common Causes of Failure

  1. Loose Fit at Connections: The hole diameter at the connection between the gas spring and the five-star base is too large, resulting in excessive assembly clearance and causing wobbling.
  2. Loose or Damaged Components: Loose screws connecting the five-star base to the gas spring, chassis fixing screws, armrest bolts, etc.; cracks or fractures in the chair legs, five-star base, or base; oil leakage at the telescopic part of the gas spring (a sign of internal seal damage); brittle plastic clips on the chassis or misalignment of the caster axles causing stuttering rotation.
  3. Gas Spring Failure: Difficulty in lifting, automatic slow descent, or obvious oil leakage, requiring replacement of the gas spring or lifting mechanism.

III. Troubleshooting and Repair Steps

  1. Preliminary Inspection

    • Visual Inspection: Flip the chair over and observe all connections for looseness, cracks, fractures, or oil leakage, focusing on the five-star base, chassis, and gas spring.
    • Tapping Inspection: Use the handle of a screwdriver to lightly tap the fasteners (such as the fixing points of the five-star base and the center turntable of the chassis). Loose components will produce a dull sound.
    • Tool Verification: Use an Allen wrench or screwdriver to tighten any suspected loose screws and check if the chassis recline adjustment valve is stuck by foreign objects. Test to confirm if the problem has improved.
  2. Repair Based on Diagnostic Results

    • Loose Screws: Thoroughly tighten all loose screws, which usually eliminates the wobbling immediately.
    • Worn or Damaged Components: Replace cracked five-star bases, damaged bases, or compatible new chassis; if the gas spring fails, contact the original manufacturer or purchase matching parts for replacement.
    • Stuttering or Abnormal Noises in the Mechanism: After cleaning dust, apply silicone-based grease to the telescopic part of the gas spring or use lubricating oil on the metal friction points of the chassis; when there is a "clicking" sound during lifting, lightly press the lifting rod and repeatedly raise and lower it 10 times to assist with lubrication.

IV. Safety Precautions
Ensure safety before operation. When dealing with core components such as the gas spring, if you are not familiar with the structure, seek professional help and do not disassemble it yourself. Prioritize choosing products from reputable brands. The gas spring should have certifications such as SGS and TUV. It is recommended to use a gas column of level 2 or above (such as level 3 or 4). Manufacturers such as Anhui Lite in China and Taiwan WDF are known for their reliable quality.
