Adjustable Office Chair Too Short
Admin October 09, 2026
If an adjustable office chair is too short, it can be resolved by adjusting the chair itself or using auxiliary tools. Here are the specific methods:

I. Adjusting the Chair Itself
Pneumatic Adjustable Chair
- Regular Adjustment: Locate the metal control lever beneath the seat. Pull the lever upward when no one is sitting to raise the chair; to lower it, sit on the chair and press down with your body weight. Alternatively, adjust using the control lever (lever or knob) on the right side beneath the seat: lift or rotate it until you hear a click, then lift the lever to the highest position when no one is sitting, or slowly lower the chair while sitting and release to lock.
- Troubleshooting: If the chair "sinks when sat on" or "cannot be adjusted higher", investigate the cause:
- Pneumatic Rod Failure: If there is a gas leak or damage inside, replace the pneumatic rod with a new one.
- Locking Mechanism Issue: Check if the locking mechanism at the bottom of the chair is too tight or stuck, and adjust to restore.
- Loose Connectors: Tighten all screws and bolts. If you do not want to replace the pneumatic rod temporarily, use an emergency fixing method: remove the fixing ring, place a PPR pipe of appropriate height as support, and then reinstall the ring (height adjustment will no longer be possible afterward).
Spiral Rotating Chair
- Rotate clockwise to lower the height and counterclockwise to raise it. If it cannot be rotated, the spiral rod may be stuck; spray WD-40 lubricant to resolve.
Old-fashioned Fixed Chair or Manual Adjustment Type
- Use a wrench to loosen the screws beneath the backrest, manually adjust to the appropriate height, and then tighten the screws to ensure stability.
II. Using Auxiliary Tools
Heightening Foot Pads
- Plastic/Rubber Foot Pads: Directly place them on the chair legs, suitable for slight heightening (2-5 cm), low cost, and easy installation.
- Wooden/Metal Blocks: More stable, suitable for higher heightening needs (e.g., over 10 cm), but pay attention to balance.
Replacing Adjustable Components
- Pneumatic Rod Extension: Suitable for computer chairs, needs to match the original chair model, can increase height by 5-15 cm, it is recommended to have it installed by a professional.
- Adjustable Chair Column: Some office chairs support replacing with an extended version of the chair column, confirm interface compatibility.
Other Methods
- Thickened Seat Cushion: Memory foam or high-density sponge cushions can indirectly raise the sitting height (3-8 cm), suitable for temporary adjustments.
- DIY Modification: For example, use a wooden board to raise the base, but ensure the structure is stable to avoid tipping risks.
After adjustment, ensure a healthy sitting posture: Keep your feet flat on the ground, thighs parallel to the ground, and eyes at an appropriate angle with the desktop or screen.
