Adjustable Office Chair Repair

Admin October 19, 2026

The repair of adjustable office chairs requires targeted handling based on different fault conditions. Common faults and repair methods are as follows:

Sideways tilt or inability to adjust height: If the chair tilts sideways or cannot adjust its height at all, the fault may lie in the base, gas lift cylinder, or the connection between the chair legs. For repairs, prepare a rubber mallet (or a regular hammer with a towel), invert the chair, remove the screws from the bottom tray, and separate the seat cushion from the base. When disassembling the base, hold it upside down with one hand and tap specific positions with the rubber mallet; if using an iron hammer, pad it with a towel to avoid damage. If the issue is with the gas lift cylinder, invert the chair and tap the bottom of the cylinder with the side of the hammer (avoiding the middle button) to check if internal piston jamming is preventing height adjustment; replace the cylinder if necessary.

Automatic descent: If the chair slowly descends after being adjusted to the desired height, it is usually related to aging or seal failure in the core height-adjustment system:

  • Gas lift cylinder aging and pressure loss: After prolonged use, the internal seals age, leading to high-pressure gas leakage and reduced locking ability. If the chair has been in use for over five years, it is recommended to replace the gas lift cylinder directly.
  • Seal wear and air leakage: Dust, moisture, or aged lubricant can infiltrate the gas lift cylinder, damaging the seal structure. Such faults cannot be repaired by disassembly and require cylinder replacement.
  • Mechanical failure of the adjustment lever: If the metal lever connecting the adjustment handle to the gas lift cylinder is misaligned, has loose screws, or worn plastic parts, it may continuously press the valve, causing the chair to continuously descend. Check the lever position, adjust the screws, or replace worn parts.
  • Deformation of the base mechanism: Prolonged overweight use or external impact may cause deformation of the base steel plate, requiring replacement of the base or correction of the deformed parts.

Inability to adjust height: Damage to the hydraulic cylinder (gas lift cylinder) is a common cause, as internal piston or seal failure can result in loss of height-adjustment function. Purchase a compatible hydraulic cylinder for replacement, ensuring alignment of the mounting holes and secure tightening of the screws to prevent air leakage or instability.

Precautions: Before repairs, ensure the chair is inverted to prevent sudden ejection of the gas lift cylinder, which could cause injury. Non-professionals are not advised to disassemble the gas lift cylinder themselves, as it is a high-pressure sealed component, and improper disassembly could pose risks. If the fault involves base deformation or complex mechanical structures, it is recommended to contact professional repair personnel for handling.
